Hypersonic Capabilities and Engine Technology
The scramjet engine, designed for India’s Hypersonic Cruise Missile, enables sustained flight at speeds exceeding Mach 5 (over 6,100 km/h). Utilizing supersonic combustion, the air-breathing engine maintains high-speed propulsion for extended periods, making it a critical component for advanced hypersonic missile systems.
The SCPT facility, developed by DRDL, allows comprehensive testing of scramjet engines under real operational conditions. The long-duration test successfully validated the performance of the combustor, thermal management systems, and overall design integrity, providing confidence for future flight trials.
Recognition and Strategic Significance
Raksha Mantri Shri Rajnath Singh congratulated DRDO, its industry partners, and academic collaborators on this path-breaking achievement. He stated that the successful test forms a solid foundation for India’s ongoing Hypersonic Cruise Missile development program.
