DRI Busts Mephedrone Factory in Wardha; 3 Arrested

RR Team, December 9, 2025December 10, 2025
Wardha / Mumbai, December 9, 2025: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) on Tuesday dismantled a clandestine mephedrone manufacturing facility in a remote area of Karanja (Ghadge), around 60 km from Wardha town, seizing 128 kg of finished mephedrone and 245 kg of precursor chemicals. Three persons, including the alleged mastermind, were arrested under provisions of the NDPS Act, officials said.

Operation Hinterland Brew: intelligence-led strike

The DRI operation  code-named “Operation Hinterland Brew”  followed targeted intelligence and discreet surveillance. Officers uncovered a temporary, modular processing unit hidden in shrubland that housed makeshift reactors, vessels and other paraphernalia used to synthesize synthetic stimulants. The seizure included both finished product and bulk precursor material essential to mephedrone production.

Scale and value of the seizure

Authorities recovered 128 kg of mephedrone, which they estimate to have a street value of approximately ₹192 crore. In addition, the DRI seized about 245 kg of precursor chemicals, raw materials and a complete processing setup — evidence that the unit was operating at significant capacity.

Arrests and alleged roles

Three individuals operating the unit were detained during the raid. Officials identified one as the alleged mastermind  who reportedly acted as financier and chemical operator  while two associates were implicated in manufacturing and distribution roles. All three have been booked under relevant sections of the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, and will be produced before the competent court.

Concealment, modus operandi and rural camouflage

Investigators said the factory was deliberately designed to blend into the rural landscape and evade detection. The temporary structure and remote location enabled the operators to conduct synthesis and storage with minimal visibility. DRI officials noted that such clandestine modular units pose enforcement challenges because they can be quickly assembled, operated, and dismantled.

Broader enforcement gains and Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan

This takedown marks the fifth clandestine drug-manufacturing facility dismantled by the DRI so far this year, reflecting sustained intelligence-driven action against synthetic drug networks. The agency highlighted the operation as part of its contribution to the Government’s Nasha Mukt Bharat Abhiyaan, aimed at curbing substance abuse and disrupting organised trafficking networks.

Investigation angles and next steps

DRI teams will continue forensic analysis of seized materials, laboratory equipment and documents to trace supply chains, precursor sources and distribution networks. Authorities also indicated follow-up operations are likely, aimed at identifying financiers, logistics channels and end-users. Multi-agency coordination, including local police and forensic labs, has been activated to bolster the probe.

Public safety and legal implications

The seizure appears to target a high-harm synthetic stimulant linked to addiction and acute health risks. Apart from criminal prosecution under NDPS laws, suspects may face asset-freezing and investigation into money-laundering links if financial trails are established. Officials underscored the need for community awareness and reporting to prevent such units from operating undetected in rural areas.
