Intelligence-Led Operation Across Multiple Locations
The crackdown followed specific intelligence inputs received by DRI officers indicating that large quantities of red sanders were being clandestinely stored in warehouses across Chennai and its outskirts. The contraband was allegedly meant to be transported to Delhi under the guise of household goods before being exported illegally.
Acting swiftly, DRI teams conducted coordinated searches at three separate premises between December 9 and December 11, 2025. The operation involved meticulous planning and surveillance to dismantle the supply chain without alerting the suspects.
High-Value Seizure of Grade A Red Sanders
During the searches, officers recovered a total of 169 logs of Grade A quality red sanders weighing 5.55 metric tonnes from one location. Notably, 76 of these logs had been wrapped in white HDPE material and were ready for loading onto a truck for transportation to Delhi, concealed under declared cargo of household articles.
The DRI seized both the prohibited red sanders and the cover goods under provisions of the Customs Act, 1962. In two additional premises, another 9.55 metric tonnes of red sanders were recovered in the form of logs, roots, and finished furniture, taking the total seizure to 15 metric tonnes.
Four Arrested, Key Operative Among Accused
Four individuals have been arrested in connection with the case, including the key operative believed to be coordinating the smuggling network. Two of the accused were involved in packing and transportation, while the fourth acted as an intermediary on the supplier side.
Officials stated that the arrests were crucial in disrupting the organised syndicate responsible for sourcing, storing, and attempting to export the prohibited timber. Further investigation is underway to identify additional links, funding channels, and international buyers.
Protected Species Under Indian and International Law
Red sanders (Pterocarpus santalinus) is a rare and highly valuable species endemic to parts of southern India. It is listed under Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) and under Schedule IV of the Wildlife Protection Act, 1972.
Export of red sanders is prohibited or strictly restricted under India’s Foreign Trade Policy due to its ecological importance and rampant illegal exploitation. Smuggling of the wood has long been linked to organised crime networks due to its high demand in overseas markets.
DRI Reaffirms Commitment to Protect Biodiversity
The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence reiterated its commitment to safeguarding India’s economic frontiers and natural heritage. Officials emphasized that enforcement agencies will continue intelligence-led operations to curb wildlife crime and prevent illegal exports.
Such seizures not only protect endangered species but also reinforce India’s obligations under international environmental conventions. The case serves as a strong deterrent to smugglers seeking to exploit loopholes in logistics and trade systems.
