DRI Seizes ₹4.8 Crore Chinese Firecrackers

RR Team, October 21, 2025October 21, 2025
New Delhi, October 21, 2025: In a major crackdown against illegal imports, the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) has seized Chinese-origin firecrackers worth ₹4.82 crore under its ongoing operation code-named “Operation Fire Trail.” The consignment was intercepted at Mumbai’s Nhava Sheva port, one of India’s busiest trade gateways.

Container Declared as ‘Leggings’ Hid Fireworks Worth Crores

According to the DRI, officers intercepted a 40-foot container shipped from China and destined for ICD Ankleshwar. It was falsely declared as carrying “leggings.” A detailed examination revealed 46,640 pieces of firecrackers and fireworks concealed behind a superficial layer of garments placed at the front of the container.

The entire illegal consignment was seized, and authorities valued it at approximately ₹4.82 crore. This operation underscores DRI’s commitment to curbing the inflow of hazardous goods that could endanger public safety and national security.

Smuggling Network Busted; Key Suspect Arrested

Following the seizure, DRI teams conducted coordinated searches at multiple locations, recovering incriminating documents detailing the smuggling syndicate’s modus operandi. The investigation led to the arrest of a key person from Veraval in Gujarat, believed to be linked to the import racket.

Import of Firecrackers Restricted Under Indian Law

The import of firecrackers in India is classified as ‘Restricted’ under the ITC (HS) Classification of the Foreign Trade Policy. Such imports require valid licenses from both the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT) and the Petroleum and Explosives Safety Organization (PESO) as per the Explosives Rules, 2008.

Unauthorized imports of fireworks pose severe risks due to their chemical composition and explosive nature. They can endanger not only port workers but also the surrounding infrastructure, including vessels and storage facilities.

DRI’s Ongoing Efforts to Protect India’s Trade Ecosystem

The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence has been actively targeting organized smuggling operations under “Operation Fire Trail,” aimed at dismantling networks involved in importing banned or hazardous materials. Officials stated that such seizures serve as a strong deterrent against attempts to bypass India’s trade and safety regulations.

“The unlawful import of hazardous goods poses a grave risk to public safety and the security of India’s ports. DRI remains committed to protecting citizens and upholding the integrity of the nation’s trade system,” said a senior official.
