Dussehra (Vijayadashami) 2024

RR Team, October 12, 2024October 12, 2024

Dussehra, also known as Vijayadashami, is one of the most significant Hindu festivals, celebrated across India. It marks the conclusion of the nine-day Navratri festival and falls on the tenth day of the Hindu month of Kartik. In 2024, Dussehra will be observed on 12th October, a Saturday.

Why is Dussehra Celebrated?

The festival of Dussehra symbolizes the triumph of good over evil. It commemorates Lord Rama’s victory over the demon king Ravana and also celebrates Goddess Durga’s victory over the buffalo demon Mahishasura. This day is a reminder of righteousness prevailing and is celebrated with fervor and devotion.

How is Dussehra Celebrated?

Dussehra celebrations vary across different regions of India. In many places, effigies of Ravana, along with his brothers Meghnath and Kumbhakarna, are burned to symbolize the destruction of evil. The celebration often includes fireworks, fairs, and colorful processions.

In some parts of the country, especially in northern India, the famous “Ram Leela” is performed, where the entire story of the Ramayana is enacted in the days leading up to Dussehra. In the eastern states, Dussehra coincides with Durga Puja, where idols of Goddess Durga, Lakshmi, Saraswati, and other deities are immersed in rivers, marking the end of Navratri.

Significance of Dussehra

Dussehra is more than just a festival; it is a celebration of righteousness and justice. The defeat of Ravana represents the triumph of truth, while the immersion of Durga idols signifies the return of the goddess to her divine abode. Across India, the festival holds cultural and spiritual significance, bringing people together in celebration.
