The southwest monsoon has arrived in Kerala, bringing much-needed relief and marking the early beginning of the rainy season across India. This year, the monsoon has set in eight days ahead of schedule, making it the earliest arrival since 2009. As the skies opened up over Kerala, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued red alerts for several districts in the state, including Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Kottayam, Alappuzha, Thrissur, Idukki, and Malappuram, warning of extremely heavy rainfall in the coming days.
This timely arrival of the monsoon has brought hope to farmers and communities who depend on seasonal rains for agriculture and water security. However, the early downpours have also raised concerns, prompting authorities to prepare for potential flooding and disruptions. Coastal areas, especially in Karnataka and Goa, are under red alert, with the IMD forecasting intense showers and gusty winds due to a low-pressure area over the Arabian Sea.
In Karnataka, particularly in the coastal districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, and Uttara Kannada, very heavy rainfall and winds reaching speeds of 30–40 kmph are expected. Interior districts such as Ballari, Bengaluru Rural and Urban, and Tumakuru are also likely to experience moderate to heavy rain. Authorities have urged residents to stay cautious, especially in vulnerable areas.
Goa too is bracing for rough weather, with a red alert issued until Sunday. The IMD has warned fishermen to avoid venturing out to sea, as wind speeds may reach up to 60 kmph along the Konkan coast. The state has already witnessed heavy showers in the past 24 hours, and emergency response teams are on standby.
Mumbai, meanwhile, is preparing for a significant change in weather from May 25 to 27. While the city experienced partly cloudy skies with warm temperatures around 33°C, the coming days are expected to bring widespread rain and thunderstorms. The IMD has warned of potential waterlogging and traffic delays, urging residents to take precautions and stay updated through official alerts.
The early onset of the monsoon is both a blessing and a challenge. It offers a promising start to the agricultural season but also demands caution and preparedness. Across the affected states, the mood is one of watchfulness and hope, as people adapt to the changing weather and look forward to the life-giving rains that nourish the land and refresh the spirit.
