Eastern Region to Drive India’s Aviation Growth: Naidu

RR Team, August 28, 2025August 28, 2025
Union Civil Aviation Minister Shri Rammohan Naidu Kinjarapu has called the Eastern Region a vital driver of India’s future aviation growth, citing its strategic location, industrial potential, and expanding tourism opportunities. Speaking at the Eastern Region Ministers’ Conference on Civil Aviation in Bhubaneswar, the Minister stressed that air connectivity is no longer a luxury but a critical enabler of economic transformation under the vision of Viksit Bharat @2047.

Centre-State Collaboration for Aviation Growth

Highlighting the need for stronger partnerships between the Centre, States, and industry, Shri Naidu said the Eastern Region has diverse connectivity needs given its coastal access, industrial hubs, and fast-growing tier-II cities. He assured that the Central Government will continue supporting the states in building modern aviation infrastructure and expanding regional air links.

He credited the success of the UDAN scheme for making air travel more accessible and affordable. “Aviation today is more available, accessible, and affordable than ever before,” he noted, adding that regional carriers, airport expansion, and investments in Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul (MRO) facilities are driving the sector’s transformation.

Odisha Showcases Commitment to Aviation Sector

Odisha Chief Minister Shri Mohan Charan Majhi underlined the State’s commitment to strengthening civil aviation for balanced regional growth. He pointed out that improved connectivity would boost cargo logistics, industrial development, and tourism, while pledging Odisha’s active collaboration with the aviation industry and the Union Ministry.

Odisha Commerce and Transport Minister Shri Bibhuti Bhushan Jena also emphasized the economic potential of regional connectivity and assured state support for initiatives that bring jobs and opportunities to Eastern India.

Major Announcements and Agreements

The conference witnessed several key agreements, including the establishment of an anchor MRO facility at Bhubaneswar Airport by Air Works India in partnership with the Odisha Government. The facility will cater to both domestic and international operators and create significant skilled employment.

Air India signed a Letter of Intent with Odisha to launch a Cadet Pilot Program with special focus on empowering tribal girls. Additionally, skill development training programs under the Nua Odisha scheme will prepare youth for specialized roles in aviation maintenance and operations.

Infrastructure Expansion and Regional Connectivity

Minister of State for Civil Aviation Shri Murlidhar Mohol highlighted that India’s aviation infrastructure has expanded from 74 airports in 2014 to 162 in 2025. In the Eastern Region alone, 12 RCS-UDAN airports and 115 routes have become operational. He also spoke of upcoming projects, including the new terminal at Patna, civil enclave at Bihta, the soon-to-be-operational Purnia airport, and the proposed greenfield airport in Puri.

Chhattisgarh Finance Minister Shri Om Prakash Choudhary emphasized the importance of aviation in enabling inclusive growth and reaffirmed his State’s resolve to collaborate closely with the Centre to expand connectivity.

Industry Participation and Future Outlook

The event drew participation from senior officials of six states and UTs, along with over 100 industry stakeholders, including airlines, OEMs, MROs, FTOs, drone companies, and cargo players. The Ministry presented sectoral roadmaps on airport and helipad development, drone ecosystem, aviation skilling, and emergency medical services.

Adding momentum to India’s aviation vision, the Ministry announced the upcoming flagship event Wings India 2026, to be held in Hyderabad from 28–31 January 2026. The global platform will showcase India’s aviation achievements and foster new partnerships.

Aviation for Inclusive Growth

The Bhubaneswar conference marks a significant milestone in regional aviation planning. It not only focused on infrastructure and investment but also on inclusivity, as reflected in the inauguration of the fifth UDAN Yatri Café at Bhubaneswar Airport and a new children’s play arena to enhance passenger experience.

With its unique strengths, the Eastern Region is now positioned to play a pivotal role in making India a global aviation powerhouse.
