ECI, Naam Tamilar Katchi Discuss Electoral Reforms

RR Team, September 10, 2025September 10, 2025
The Election Commission of India (ECI) on Tuesday held an interaction with a delegation from Naam Tamilar Katchi (NTK), led by its authorised representative K. Senthilkumar, at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi. The meeting was chaired by Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, alongside Election Commissioners Dr. Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Dr. Vivek Joshi. The delegation shared their suggestions and perspectives on strengthening the electoral process.
This dialogue forms part of the Commission’s ongoing initiative to engage with national and state political parties. By providing a direct platform for leaders to present their views, the Commission aims to make elections more inclusive, transparent, and responsive to stakeholders’ concerns.

Background of the Initiative

Over the last six months, the ECI has actively expanded its outreach to political parties across the country. According to official data, 4,719 all-party meetings were conducted, including 40 at the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) level, 800 by District Electoral Officers (DEOs), and 3,879 by Electoral Registration Officers (EROs). Together, these engagements reached more than 28,000 representatives of political parties.

The Commission underlined that such dialogues are critical to building trust and fostering collaboration between the ECI and all political stakeholders. It reaffirmed that all discussions and reforms would remain aligned with the existing constitutional and legal framework.

Part of Wider Engagements with Parties

The NTK interaction is the latest in a series of meetings ECI has held with both national and state parties. In recent months, prominent leaders including BSP’s Mayawati, BJP’s J.P. Nadda, CPI(M)’s M.A. Baby, NPP’s Conrad Sangma, and AAP’s Arvind Kejriwal have shared their perspectives with the Commission.

Similarly, regional parties such as the AITC, YSR Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, AIMIM, DMK, AIADMK, Shiv Sena, BJD, JD(U), and BRS have also engaged with the ECI. This systematic outreach highlights the Commission’s effort to ensure balanced representation of both national and state voices in shaping electoral practices.

Reinforcing Democratic Participation

The ECI emphasised that constructive dialogues help identify practical solutions to challenges faced during elections. Party representatives have raised issues ranging from electoral rolls and campaign financing to the use of technology in voting and greater inclusivity for marginalised communities.

Experts note that these engagements not only improve the credibility of the electoral process but also enhance citizens’ trust in democracy. By ensuring that all parties have a voice in consultations, the Commission aims to maintain fairness and transparency in upcoming elections.
