EDICON 2026: Power Minister Stresses Robust DISCOMs

Shri Manohar Lal, Minister of Power, inaugurated the Electricity Distribution Industry Conference (EDICON) 2026 in New Delhi, emphasizing the urgent need for financially strong and efficient DISCOMs. Addressing industry leaders, regulators, and stakeholders, he highlighted that a thriving power sector is essential to support India’s growing economy.
The two-day conference, held on 21–22 January 2026 under the aegis of the Ministry of Power and All India Discoms Association (AIDA), aims to address challenges in electricity distribution, enhance operational efficiency, and promote consumer-centric services. Shri Manohar Lal stressed the need for strong DISCOMs to ensure better service quality and responsiveness to consumer needs.

Call for Cost-Reflective Tariffs

The Minister urged State Electricity Regulatory Commissions to adopt cost-reflective tariffs while maintaining targeted subsidies for vulnerable consumers as per the Electricity Act. He underlined that financial stability of DISCOMs is directly linked to the quality of electricity distribution services and consumer satisfaction.

AIDA Annual Report Released

During the event, Shri Manohar Lal unveiled the first edition of AIDA’s annual report titled “India Discoms: 2025”. The report provides an extensive outlook on the distribution sector, highlighting the challenges faced by DISCOMs, initiatives by the Ministry of Power and CERC, and technological advancements such as the India Energy Stack and Draft Electricity Amendment Bill. It also features thirteen expert articles on trends and innovations in the power sector.

Award Ceremony Recognizes Excellence

The Minister conferred Gold and Silver awards to 12 DISCOMs across six categories, recognizing achievements in rural revenue recovery, smart meter utilization, digital payment adoption, renewable energy integration, agricultural feeder solarization, and effective change management. Awardees hailed from Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal.

Promoting Collaboration and Innovation

Shri Pankaj Agarwal, Secretary, Ministry of Power, Shri Lokesh Chandra, CMD, MSEDCL and President, AIDA, Dr. Ashish Kumar Goel, Chairperson, UPPCL, and Shri Alok Kumar, Director General, AIDA, along with other prominent stakeholders attended the event. The conference emphasized collaborative solutions for DISCOM challenges, technological integration, and policy reforms to strengthen India’s electricity distribution sector.

The EDICON 2026 conference serves as a platform for knowledge sharing, innovation promotion, and coordinated action among power sector stakeholders to ensure financially robust DISCOMs and improved service delivery across India.
