Gautam Gambhir Breaks Silence on Rohit, Kohli Exit Claims

RR Team, January 21, 2026January 22, 2026
Indian men’s cricket team head coach Gautam Gambhir has firmly responded to growing speculation that he is attempting to sideline senior players Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from the national setup. Addressing the criticism for the first time in recent weeks, Gambhir said the “truth and logic” behind team selection decisions will eventually become clear.
The remarks came shortly after India’s convincing 48-run victory over New Zealand in the Nagpur T20 International, a win that temporarily eased pressure on the team management following mixed performances in recent series.

Social Media Speculation and Selection Debate

Over the past few months, social media platforms and former cricketers have fuelled claims that Gambhir is backing players of his preference while denying others fair opportunities. The narrative gained momentum after Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli announced their Test retirements last year, triggering debate over whether the exits were entirely voluntary.

While no official confirmation has supported such claims, the chatter intensified amid India’s inconsistent performances in certain bilateral series, placing Gambhir’s leadership style and authority under the spotlight.

Tharoor’s Post and Gambhir’s Response

Gambhir’s comments were in response to a post shared by Congress MP Shashi Tharoor, an avid cricket follower, who posted a selfie with the former opener ahead of the Nagpur match. Tharoor humorously described Gambhir’s role as India’s head coach as the “second-most difficult job in the country after the Prime Minister.”

Quoting the post, Gambhir thanked Tharoor and addressed the criticism head-on, stating that once emotions settle, the perception of a coach wielding “unlimited authority” in team selection will be understood more rationally.

‘Amused by the Narrative,’ Says Gambhir

In his message, Gambhir said he found it ironic that he was being portrayed as being at odds with players he deeply respects. He stressed that selection decisions are collective and driven by long-term planning rather than individual preferences.

“Till then, I’m amused at being pitted against my own who are the very best,” Gambhir wrote, underlining that internal unity remains intact despite outside noise.

Track Record as Coach

Gambhir also has supporters who point to India’s recent successes under his tenure, including victories in major multi-nation tournaments. Critics, however, argue that losses in certain home and overseas series have raised questions about consistency and squad balance.

Last year, after India suffered a Test series defeat at home, Gambhir reminded critics of the broader context, emphasising that rebuilding phases often come with short-term setbacks.

Focus Shifts Back to the Field

With a packed international calendar ahead, including high-profile tournaments in 2026, the Indian team management is keen to move past speculation and focus on performance. Senior players, young talents, and selectors are expected to remain aligned as preparations intensify.
