GG vs MI: Gujarat Giants Bat First in Crucial WPL Eliminator Clash

RR Team, January 30, 2026January 31, 2026
Gujarat Giants (GG) made a bold tactical call by opting to bat first against Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-pressure Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2026 encounter, with a coveted spot in the Eliminator hanging in the balance. The winner of this match will secure qualification for the playoffs, while the losing side will be forced to rely on results from other fixtures.
The decision at the toss immediately drew attention, given Mumbai Indians’ dominant 8-0 head-to-head record against Gujarat Giants in WPL history. Despite this, GG skipper Ashleigh Gardner backed her side’s recent form and familiarity with batting first, underlining her confidence in setting a challenging total.

Gardner Trusts Batting Strength

Captain Ashleigh Gardner explained that Gujarat Giants had enjoyed success this season while batting first, winning all four matches in which they set a target. That confidence outweighed memories of their previous meeting against MI, where they failed to defend a total of 192 in Navi Mumbai.

Gardner retained the same playing XI that defeated Delhi Capitals three nights earlier, signalling continuity and belief in the team’s balance. With experienced international batters and a varied bowling attack, GG aimed to dictate terms early and apply scoreboard pressure.

Mumbai Indians Comfortable Chasing

Mumbai Indians captain Harmanpreet Kaur revealed that her side would have preferred to bowl first regardless of the toss outcome. MI’s campaign this season has shown flexibility, with victories coming both while setting targets and chasing them down.

In their most recent match, MI were powered by Nat Sciver-Brunt, who scored the first-ever century in WPL history. That knock not only sealed a comprehensive win over Royal Challengers Bengaluru but also reinforced MI’s reputation as one of the most formidable batting units in the league.

Pitch and Conditions

The match was played on Pitch No. 4, which presented intriguing dimensions. One square boundary measured 59 metres, significantly longer than the opposite side at 51 metres, while the straight boundary stretched to 68 metres.

These dimensions placed a premium on smart shot selection and strong running between the wickets. Spinners were expected to come into play as the surface slowed down, potentially making the decision to bat first a calculated gamble.

High Stakes in the Playoff Race

The significance of this clash extended beyond the two teams on the field. A win would immediately seal a playoff berth for the victorious side, while defeat would leave qualification dependent on the outcome of the Delhi Capitals versus UP Warriorz match scheduled for Sunday.

Such scenarios have defined the competitive edge of WPL 2026, with multiple teams remaining in contention deep into the league stage. The pressure of knockout qualification added intensity to every decision, from team selection to on-field tactics.

Playing XIs

Gujarat Giants: Beth Mooney (wk), Sophie Devine, Anushka Sharma, Ashleigh Gardner (capt), Georgia Wareham, Bharti Fulmali, Kanika Ahuja, Kashvee Gautam, Tanuja Kanwar, Renuka Singh, Rajeshwari Gayakwad.

Mumbai Indians: Hayley Matthews, Sajeevan Sajana, Nat Sciver-Brunt, Harmanpreet Kaur (capt), Amanjot Kaur, Amelia Kerr, Rahila Firdous (wk), Sanskriti Gupta, Poonam Khemnar, Shabnim Ismail, Vaishnavi Sharma.

Momentum vs History

While Mumbai Indians entered the contest with a flawless record against Gujarat Giants, cricket often turns on momentum rather than history. GG’s recent form and clarity in decision-making suggested a side ready to challenge past narratives.

As the WPL continues to grow in stature, matches like this underline the league’s competitive depth and the rising quality of women’s cricket in India. Fans can expect a fiercely contested battle as both teams chase their playoff ambitions.
