GI-Tagged Indi Lime from Karnataka Exports to Oman

RR Team, December 19, 2025December 19, 2025
In a landmark move for India’s agricultural exports, 3 metric tonnes (MTs) of GI-tagged Indi Lime from Vijayapura district, Karnataka, were exported to Oman on 19 December 2025. This shipment marks the entry of India’s renowned citrus fruit into a new international market, further strengthening the country’s agri-trade footprint.

Building on Early Success in Global Markets

The Oman shipment follows the initial export of 3 MTs of GI-tagged Indi Lime to Dubai on 24 August 2025. The positive reception in the UAE market led to subsequent exports of nearly 12 MTs to Dubai, quadrupling the initial quantity. Additionally, 350 kg of Indi Lime has been flagged off for export to the United Kingdom as part of India’s ongoing market diversification strategy. Cumulatively, nearly 12.35 MTs of GI-tagged Indi Lime have been exported from Vijayapura district.

Significance of India–Oman CEPA

The export to Oman comes in the backdrop of the recently signed India–Oman Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA), which aims to deepen bilateral trade and expand market access for Indian exporters. The agreement is expected to benefit key sectors including agricultural and processed food products, enhancing India’s competitiveness in Omani markets and opening new avenues for farmers.

GI Tag Advantage and Farmer Benefits

The GI (Geographical Indication) status of Indi Lime, known for its distinctive aroma, high juice content, and extended shelf life, has been instrumental in positioning the fruit in global markets. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) has played a key role in promoting and branding GI-tagged products while ensuring compliance with international quality standards. These exports help farmers realize better incomes by accessing premium international markets and reducing reliance on fluctuating domestic prices.

The successful entry of GI-tagged Indi Lime into Oman underscores India’s potential as a reliable supplier of high-quality, region-specific agricultural produce. It also highlights the strategic importance of CEPA in expanding agri-trade, offering opportunities for farmers and strengthening India’s overall export ecosystem.
