Giriraj Singh Launches Handloom Expo in Delhi

RR Team, February 23, 2026February 24, 2026
New Delhi, February 23, 2026: Union Minister of Textiles Giriraj Singh on Monday inaugurated the Special Handloom Expo at Handloom Haat, Janpath, while presiding over the 43rd Foundation Day celebrations of the National Handloom Development Corporation (NHDC), reaffirming the government’s commitment to strengthening India’s traditional weaving sector.
The event witnessed the presence of senior officials including Neelam Shami Rao, Secretary, Ministry of Textiles, and Dr. M. Beena, Development Commissioner (Handlooms), along with weavers, cooperative societies, and stakeholders from across the country.

Boosting Rural Livelihoods Through Handloom

Addressing the gathering, the Minister highlighted the importance of the handloom sector in sustaining rural employment and promoting environmentally sustainable production systems. He described handloom as a symbol of India’s cultural identity and self-reliance.

Giriraj Singh reiterated the Centre’s focus on strengthening domestic manufacturing, expanding market access for artisans, and encouraging citizens to support Swadeshi textiles. He also outlined future plans aimed at enhancing marketing infrastructure and financial assistance for weaving communities.

According to official information released by the Press Information Bureau, NHDC has played a crucial role over the past four decades in ensuring yarn supply, facilitating marketing support, and strengthening the overall handloom ecosystem.

Special Handloom Expo: Direct Market Access

The Special Handloom Expo, being held from February 21 to March 2, 2026, is designed to promote Swadeshi handloom products and strengthen direct connections between weavers and consumers. By reducing dependence on intermediaries, the initiative aims to ensure better earnings for artisans.

The exhibition features 60 stalls, including 48 dedicated to handloom products and 12 showcasing handicrafts. Visitors can explore a diverse range of sarees, shawls, fabrics, and home furnishings that reflect the rich regional weaving traditions of India.

The Minister toured the exhibition area and interacted with participating weavers. He appreciated the innovation, quality, and variety of handwoven products on display, noting the growing consumer interest in indigenous textiles.

Comic Book to Engage Younger Generation

In a bid to create greater awareness about the handloom sector, the Minister released a multilingual comic book during the event. The publication presents the legacy, techniques, and cultural significance of handloom weaving in an engaging and accessible format, particularly targeting young readers.

Officials believe such initiatives are essential to connect the next generation with India’s traditional crafts and to sustain long-term demand for handloom products.

Recognising Excellence in Craftsmanship

The Foundation Day celebrations also included the presentation of NHDC’s annual performance report, highlighting major initiatives and outreach programmes undertaken during the past year. The report detailed efforts focused on economic empowerment and improved market linkages for weavers.

Distinguished weavers and artisans from various states were felicitated for their exceptional craftsmanship and continued contribution to preserving India’s rich weaving heritage.

Paridhan Pradarshini Showcases Diversity

A key highlight of the event was the Paridhan Pradarshini, which showcased an elegant collection of handloom garments representing various regional traditions. The display reflected the intricate craftsmanship and aesthetic excellence embedded in India’s textile heritage.

The 43rd Foundation Day celebration of NHDC not only marked a significant milestone in the Corporation’s journey but also reinforced the broader national objective of promoting self-reliance and sustainable livelihoods through indigenous industries.

With initiatives like the Special Handloom Expo, the government aims to further strengthen India’s handloom sector and ensure that traditional artisans continue to thrive in a modern market environment.
