Global Universities in Mumbai: NEP 2020’s Bold Leap

RR Team, June 15, 2025June 14, 2025

Mumbai Emerges as Global Education Hub Under NEP 2020

In a transformative move, India has issued Letters of Intent (LoIs) to three leading global universities to establish their campuses in Mumbai and Navi Mumbai. This aligns with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, which envisions India as a global knowledge destination.

At the event titled “Mumbai Rising: Creating an International Education City”, Shri Dharmendra Pradhan, Union Minister of Education, announced the partnership with:

  • Illinois Institute of Technology (USA)

  • Instituto Europeo Di Design (IED) (Italy)

The announcement marks a historic step in bringing international-quality education closer to Indian students, reducing the need to study abroad.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

  • UG & PG programs in areas like Business, Computer Science, Public Health, Data Science, and Design.

  • First time international universities are setting up campuses in Mumbai/Navi Mumbai.

  • New institutions will function under UGC’s 2023 Regulations for foreign universities.

  • Record-breaking approval speed—LoIs granted within just one month.

With the inclusion of these universities, students will gain access to global academic curricula at home.

Affordable Global Education for Indian Students

Shri Devendra Fadnavis, Chief Minister of Maharashtra, praised the NEP 2020 for enabling this initiative. He stressed that students can now pursue foreign-standard education within India, making it more affordable and accessible.

“This opportunity removes barriers and brings global quality learning to our youth,” he stated.

Vision of a Global Knowledge Ecosystem

Shri Dharmendra Pradhan emphasized that India isn’t just hosting foreign campuses—it’s shaping the future of global education. Mumbai, with its blend of technology, finance, and academia, is uniquely positioned to evolve into an education and research powerhouse.

“We’re building ecosystems of innovation, entrepreneurship, and collaboration,” he noted.

This initiative echoes the spirit of ‘Sankalp Se Siddhi’, aiming to achieve innovation-driven growth for a Viksit Bharat.

Regulatory Support Enabling Global Entry

Dr. Vineet Joshi, Chairman of the University Grants Commission (UGC), highlighted the Ministry’s role in streamlining approvals and promoting global collaboration. The digital process for LoI issuance ensures transparency and efficiency.

The UGC has now approved seven foreign universities for operations in India, including previously announced names like the University of Liverpool and University of Southampton. Earlier entrants such as Deakin University and University of Wollongong have already launched their campuses in GIFT City, Gujarat.

Indian Universities Expanding Globally Too

India is not only inviting global campuses; it’s also expanding its academic footprint abroad. Key examples include:

  • IIT Delhi’s campus in Abu Dhabi

  • IIT Madras operating in Tanzania

  • IIM Ahmedabad preparing to set up in Dubai

Such developments showcase India’s two-way commitment to internationalization in education.

Conclusion: NEP 2020 Driving Educational Revolution

As India celebrates five impactful years of NEP 2020, this development underscores the nation’s efforts to make its education system globally competitive and inclusive. The initiative paves the way for youth empowerment, innovation, and world-class research.

By offering premium global education at local cost, Mumbai is set to lead India’s rise as a global education capital.
