The Union government has announced its decision to allocate space for a memorial in honor of Dr. Manmohan Singh, the former Prime Minister of India, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 92. Known as a transformative leader, Singh served two terms as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, leading the Congress-led UPA government and spearheading landmark economic reforms.

In a statement released late on December 28, the Union Home Ministry confirmed that Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had requested the memorial. Following a Cabinet discussion, Union Home Minister Amit Shah assured Singh’s family and Kharge that space would be provided for the memorial.
While Singh’s cremation will be held at Delhi’s Nigambodh Ghat with full state honors at 11:45 AM on Saturday, the establishment of a memorial requires the creation of a trust and the formal allocation of land.
