Government Cracks Down on Online Gaming Addiction to Protect Users

RR Team, March 19, 2025

The Government of India has been taking active steps to curb online gaming addiction, recognizing its potential risks, particularly among the youth. As part of its broader mission to ensure a safe and responsible digital environment, the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) has issued 1,298 blocking directions for online betting, gambling, and gaming websites between 2022 and 2024.

The rise of online gaming has brought with it significant concerns, including addiction, financial losses, and its impact on mental health. The government, after extensive consultations with stakeholders, introduced amendments to the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules, 2021. These amendments impose strict obligations on online gaming platforms and intermediaries, ensuring that they do not host or promote unlawful content, including activities related to gambling and money laundering.

Recognizing the growing influence of digital platforms, the government has mandated that online gaming intermediaries must act swiftly to remove any harmful or illegal content. These measures aim to create a more accountable online ecosystem, where platforms are responsible for ensuring that users—especially children and vulnerable individuals—are protected from exploitative gaming practices.

In addition to regulatory amendments, the Information Technology Act, 2000, grants authorities the power to block access to certain online content in the interest of national security, public order, and the broader well-being of citizens. The government has reiterated its commitment to ensuring that the digital space remains a place of innovation and entertainment while minimizing the risks associated with excessive gaming.

While online gaming has often been linked to mental health issues and financial distress, official data from the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB) does not specifically track suicides related to online gaming. However, concerns persist, and authorities continue to monitor the evolving landscape to take necessary actions when required.

The issue was addressed in the Lok Sabha today by Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, who reaffirmed the government’s dedication to balancing digital freedom with necessary safeguards. The government’s interventions reflect a growing awareness of the challenges posed by online gaming and a commitment to protecting individuals from its negative effects.
