The notification adds another 18 agencies to the existing pool, providing coal block allottees greater flexibility in engaging accredited agencies for geological surveys and exploration work. Since geological reporting is a prerequisite for mine operationalization, this expansion is expected to save approximately six months that were previously required to obtain prospecting licenses.
By broadening the roster of accredited prospecting agencies, the government aims to encourage private sector participation, boost efficiency, and introduce competitive and innovative practices into the coal exploration ecosystem. This step is expected to speed up mine development and improve coal and lignite availability for India’s growing energy demands.
The Ministry of Coal highlighted that these measures align with India’s vision of Aatmanirbhar Bharat, fostering self-reliance in the energy sector while ensuring transparency, efficiency, and long-term sustainability. This proactive approach will help meet national energy needs and reinforce the country’s energy security.
