Gujarat Cabinet Resigns Ahead of Local Polls; Expansion Friday

RR Team, October 16, 2025October 16, 2025
In a major political development ahead of local body elections, the entire Gujarat cabinet, except Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, resigned on Thursday. Sources reported that all 16 ministers, including eight cabinet-rank ministers and nine ministers of state, submitted their resignations to the party leadership.
The reshuffle comes nearly three years into the current government’s term and just months before crucial elections for municipal corporations, municipalities, district panchayats, and taluka panchayats. BJP insiders said the resignations aim to allow a strategic cabinet expansion to strengthen the party’s position in the upcoming polls.

Earlier this month, MoS Jagdish Vishwakarma was appointed as BJP’s Gujarat state president, succeeding Union Minister CR Paatil. CM Bhupendra Patel, who began his second term on December 12, 2022, will continue in office. The cabinet is slated for expansion on Friday at 11:30 AM, with Governor Acharya Devvratji administering the oath of office and secrecy to newly designated ministers.

Gujarat’s 182-member assembly allows up to 27 ministers, equivalent to 15% of the house. Political analysts believe this reshuffle is designed to enhance BJP’s administrative and electoral efficiency before key local polls. The move is also expected to realign internal party dynamics and reward loyal leaders with ministerial positions.

Political observers note that such strategic resignations and cabinet expansions are common before elections, allowing the ruling party to optimize governance and electoral outreach. The expansion on Friday will likely reflect BJP’s priorities in consolidating support across Gujarat’s local constituencies.

As Gujarat approaches its local elections, parties across the spectrum are recalibrating strategies to appeal to voters in urban and rural centers alike. The timing of this cabinet reshuffle indicates BJP’s intent to maximize visibility and administrative control in the lead-up to voting.
