A Mother’s Heartbreaking Escape from the Kashmir Attack
Sujatha, wife of Bengaluru-based techie Bharath Bhushan, recounted the final moments of her husband’s life before he was brutally killed in the Kashmir terror attack on Tuesday. As gunfire erupted around them, Bharath’s last words were to comfort his family: “Don’t worry, don’t worry… stay strong.
Despite knowing he was a father travelling with his wife and young child, the attacker showed no mercy.
Sujatha recalled being near a tent, browsing traditional Kashmiri outfits, when the horror began. A gunman who had just killed a tourist approached her and questioned coldly, “How can you be happy here while our children are dying? Don’t you read the news about us?”
He shot another tourist nearby, then turned to her husband. “What is your name?” the gunman asked. “My name is Bharath,” he replied.
That was the last thing Bharath ever said. He was shot in the head three times.
After he was shot, the terrorist walked away,” Sujatha recounted. “I rushed to my husband, grabbed his wallet, our BSNL postpaid phone, and our bags from a nearby bench. I’m a doctor — I knew he wouldn’t survive a headshot.
Grabbing her three-year-old son, she ran. “There were bodies everywhere. I kept looking back to see if anyone was chasing us. Eventually, I climbed onto a horse with my son. The CRPF found us and took us to safety.
Bharath’s body arrived in Bengaluru around 3:45 a.m. on Thursday via a special flight. He was cremated with full state honours.
