A heavy rush of passengers at the New Delhi Railway Station on Sunday evening created a chaotic scene, but authorities swiftly intervened to prevent any serious incidents. The congestion was caused by delays in the departure of several trains, including the Shiv Ganga Express, Swatantrata Senani Express, Jammu Rajdhani Express, Lucknow Mail, and Magadh Express. As crowds swelled on platforms 12 and 13, the situation grew tense, raising concerns among travelers.
Despite the anxiety among passengers, officials confirmed that there was no stampede or injuries. Police and railway staff promptly implemented crowd control measures, ensuring that the gathering did not spiral into panic. Deputy Commissioner of Police (Railways) KPS Malhotra reassured the public, stating that while the station did experience an unusual rush, the situation improved once a few trains departed, allowing the crowd to disperse.
The incident revived memories of the tragic stampede that occurred in February, where 18 people, including women and children, lost their lives while attempting to board trains to attend the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj. The fear of history repeating itself lingered among passengers, but the quick response from authorities prevented any mishap this time.
Railway stations across the country frequently witness overcrowding, especially during peak travel seasons and festival periods. The Indian Railways has been considering new measures to better manage passenger flow at major stations to prevent such chaotic situations.
