In a historic moment for Mizoram, Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation, Shri Amit Shah, oversaw the transfer of Assam Rifles Battalion land to the Government of Mizoram and the formal exchange of maps in Aizawl. The event, attended by Mizoram Chief Minister Shri Lalduhoma and other key officials, marked the fulfillment of a three-decade-old demand that had long been a source of concern for the people of Mizoram.
Shri Amit Shah described this achievement as a significant milestone in the state’s development journey. For nearly 35 years, the people of Mizoram had urged the relocation of the Assam Rifles from Aizawl to the interior regions to address space constraints and facilitate the city’s modernization. This long-pending demand, which had remained unresolved under previous governments, was finally addressed due to the decisive leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. Shri Shah emphasized that this step would unlock a vast area of land in a key region of Mizoram, paving the way for urban expansion, improved infrastructure, and economic growth.
The Union Home Minister expressed that this move is not just an administrative decision but a reflection of the Modi government’s deep commitment to the welfare and progress of Mizoram. He highlighted that since the establishment of the first army camp in Aizawl in 1890, this is the most significant decision taken for the region, one that will transform the state’s future.
Shri Shah further acknowledged the Modi government’s relentless efforts over the past decade to integrate the North-East into the national mainstream. He pointed out that from 1947 until 2014, all previous Prime Ministers collectively visited the North-East only 21 times. In contrast, Prime Minister Modi alone has made 78 visits since 2014. Additionally, Union Ministers have visited the region over 700 times in the last decade, compared to just 71 visits in the decades before.
Under Prime Minister Modi’s leadership, Mizoram is witnessing unprecedented development across various sectors, from tourism and technology to agriculture and infrastructure. Shri Shah highlighted major projects such as the ₹2,500 crore National Highway 502-A project, the four-lane road on National Highway 6 in Aizawl and Kolasib districts worth ₹1,742 crore, and the doubling of National Highway 54 with an investment of ₹1,600 crore. Bamboo link roads worth ₹100 crore have been constructed, and 10 helipads have been built at a cost of ₹2 crore. Additionally, the Bairabi-Sairang Railway project, completed at a cost of ₹5,000 crore, is expected to boost connectivity. A 164-bed super-specialty research center is being built for ₹600 crore, while the Tuirial Hydro Power Project, worth ₹1,300 crore, has already been launched. To enhance digital connectivity, 214 mobile towers have been installed across the state.
Shri Shah emphasized that while the Modi government is focused on development, it has also established peace and security in the region, which is crucial for long-term progress. He assured that the central government is fully committed to building a developed, peaceful, secure, and beautiful Mizoram.
The transfer of the Assam Rifles land symbolizes not just the resolution of a long-standing issue but also the beginning of a new era for Mizoram. With ample space now available for urban expansion and infrastructure development, the state is set to witness rapid growth and prosperity. The people of Mizoram, who have long yearned for this moment, now look forward to a future filled with opportunities and progress.
