Holika Dahan 2026: Muhurat Amid Chandra Grahan & Bhadra Kaal

This year, Holika Dahan has created confusion among devotees because Phalguna Purnima spans March 2 and March 3, 2026. Adding to this, India will witness the first Chandra Grahan (lunar eclipse) on March 3, with the Moon appearing red, popularly known as the Blood Moon. To determine the correct day for the ritual, Bhadra Kaal, Pradosh Kaal, and Sutak periods are carefully considered.

Phalguna Purnima and Holika Dahan Muhurat

According to the Hindu calendar:

  • Purnima begins: March 2, 2026, 5:56 PM IST
  • Purnima ends: March 3, 2026, 5:08 PM IST

Holika Dahan is traditionally performed on Purnima during Pradosh Kaal, provided it is free from inauspicious Bhadra. This year, the auspicious muhurat falls on March 2 between 6:22 PM and 8:53 PM IST, ensuring compliance with scriptural guidelines.

Bhadra Kaal and Sutak Considerations

Bhadra Kaal, a period considered inauspicious for religious rituals, occurs as follows:

  • Bhadra begins: March 2, 2026, 5:55 PM IST
  • Bhadra ends: March 3, 2026, 5:28 AM IST
  • Bhadra Mukha: March 2, 2:38 AM – March 3, 5:32 AM IST

By avoiding Bhadra Mukha, Holika Dahan can safely be performed in the evening Pradosh Kaal. Meanwhile, Sutak Kaal is observed due to the lunar eclipse on March 3. For the general public, Sutak begins at 9:39 AM and ends at 6:46 PM IST, while for children, elderly, and pregnant women, it starts at 3:28 PM. Religious activities are avoided during these periods.

Chandra Grahan 2026 Timings

  • Lunar Eclipse begins: 3:20 PM IST, March 3
  • Blood Moon visibility in India: 6:26 PM – 6:46 PM IST
  • Total visible duration: ~20 minutes

The eclipse adds cultural and astronomical significance to Holi celebrations, making 2026 a remarkable year for devotees and astronomers alike.

Rangwali Holi (Dhulandi) Celebration

Rangwali Holi, also known as Dhulandi, will be celebrated on March 4, 2026. Across India, people will play with colors, apply gulal, exchange greetings, and rejoice in the victory of good over evil.
