HTLS 2025: Day 3 Leaders on Economy, Security & Sport

The final day of the Hindustan Times Leadership Summit (HTLS) 2025 on December 6 brought together senior policymakers, industry chiefs and sports figures to reflect on India’s priorities in governance, geopolitics, economic ambition and sport. Keynotes and conversations by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Jammu & Kashmir CM Omar Abdullah, Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal, and cricketing voices provided a wide-ranging picture of today’s challenges and opportunities.

Yogi Adityanath: Governance, Development and Longevity in Office

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath described his eight-year tenure as a period of structural change for India’s largest state. Speaking at HTLS, Yogi credited his party and team for enabling long-term projects and stressed that sustained governance has reshaped UP’s economic and civic profile. He framed longevity in office as an outcome of persistent delivery and grassroots engagement.

Yogi’s remarks highlighted infrastructure, law-and-order initiatives and campaigns to boost UP’s recognition as an investment destination messages aimed at investors and policymakers watching the state’s transformation.

Jaishankar on Putin Visit: Reimagining Strategic Ties

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reflected on diplomatic outreach and the significance of President Vladimir Putin’s India visit for recalibrating India–Russia economic cooperation. He argued that strategic ties must evolve beyond traditional paradigms to include fresh economic and technological collaboration, especially given shifting global alignments.

Jaishankar urged a pragmatic approach to partnership while maintaining India’s strategic autonomy in a complex geostrategic environment.

Omar Abdullah: Security, Kashmir and Political Realities

Jammu & Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah used his platform to underline continuing security concerns and the human impact of violence. Abdullah cautioned against broad-brush narratives and stressed that the region’s challenges require calibrated political and economic responses. He also urged greater fiscal support for Jammu & Kashmir’s economic revival while praising the Centre’s assistance, calling for more concrete budgetary commitments.

Abdullah’s comments on home-grown terrorism and recent attacks struck a sober tone, emphasising the need for nuanced policy rather than simplified rhetoric.

Sunil Mittal: India’s 2047 Ambition and Telecom’s Global Push

Bharti Airtel chairman Sunil Mittal spoke about India’s economic trajectory toward its 2047 goals. Mittal stressed the role of digital infrastructure and trade in accelerating growth, and set an ambitious target for Airtel to become a global digital leader with a billion users. He argued that closing trade deals and harnessing domestic animal spirits will be key to scaling India’s economy in the coming decades.

Mittal’s comments reinforced the private sector’s optimism and the expectation that public policy should sustain an investor-friendly climate.

Sport & Society: Women’s Cricket and Coaching Insights

Sports sessions celebrated India’s recent achievements in women’s cricket. Coach Amol Muzumdar and all-rounder Deepti Sharma reflected on the team’s World Cup campaign, the role of parental support, discipline and coaching, and the transformative effect of the victory for women’s sport in India. Muzumdar called the World Cup win a watershed moment comparable to historic milestones in Indian sport.

Speakers emphasised that systemic support coaching, grassroots development and public enthusiasm will be essential to translate episodic success into long-term growth.

Takeaways: Policy, Partnerships and Performance

Day 3 of HTLS 2025 reinforced three interconnected themes: the importance of long-term governance for regional transformation, the need for pragmatic diplomacy amid shifting geopolitics, and the value of private-public collaboration in reaching ambitious economic and social goals. From state-level governance to global telecom ambitions and sporting excellence, speakers highlighted how coordinated policy and institutional support can multiply impact.
