ICC Warns Pakistan of Sanctions Over T20 World Cup Boycott

RR Team, January 25, 2026January 26, 2026
The International Cricket Council (ICC) has issued a strong warning to the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), cautioning that Pakistan could face serious sanctions if it decides to withdraw from the T20 World Cup 2026. The warning follows recent comments by PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi, who publicly expressed support for Bangladesh amid growing tensions surrounding the tournament.

Sources familiar with the matter say the ICC views any politically motivated withdrawal as a direct challenge to the integrity of international cricket and is prepared to take punitive action to deter such moves.

Possible sanctions outlined by ICC

According to sources, if Pakistan follows Bangladesh’s path and opts out of the T20 World Cup, the ICC could impose a series of sanctions. These include suspension of all bilateral cricket series involving Pakistan, effectively isolating the national team from international competition.

In addition, Pakistan could be barred from participating in the Asia Cup, one of the region’s most commercially significant tournaments. Such a move would have major financial and sporting implications for the PCB.

PSL could be hit by player restrictions

Another major penalty under consideration is the denial of No Objection Certificates (NOCs) for overseas players wishing to participate in the Pakistan Super League (PSL). Without NOCs from their respective boards, foreign players would be unable to take part in the tournament.

The absence of international stars could significantly reduce the PSL’s global appeal, sponsorship value and broadcast revenues, further straining Pakistan’s cricketing finances.

ICC unhappy with PCB leadership stance

The ICC’s concern reportedly stems from public statements made by PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi, which were interpreted as aligning Pakistan’s position with Bangladesh’s potential non-participation. Officials believe such statements undermine collective decision-making within the global cricket body.

While the PCB has not officially announced any decision to withdraw, ICC officials have conveyed that even signalling support for a boycott could invite scrutiny and consequences.

Why the T20 World Cup matters

The T20 World Cup is one of the ICC’s flagship events and a major source of revenue for member boards. Any disruption risks affecting broadcast contracts, sponsorships and fan engagement worldwide.

For Pakistan, participation is particularly crucial given its reliance on ICC funding and limited bilateral cricket opportunities due to geopolitical constraints.

What happens next

Sources indicate that the ICC has communicated its position informally to the PCB, urging restraint and adherence to tournament commitments. A final decision will depend on Pakistan’s official stance in the coming days.
