“ICG Leads Coastal Cleanup 2025 with 26,000+ Volunteers”

RR Team, September 22, 2025September 22, 2025
The Indian Coast Guard (ICG), as part of the Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and Prime Minister’s “Swachhta Hi Seva” initiative, successfully organized International Coastal Cleanup Day 2025 (ICC-2025) nationwide on September 20, 2025. Over 26,000 volunteers, including NCC cadets, NSS members, and students, participated in beach cleaning drives, removing litter and marine debris to restore coastal ecosystems.
The event focused on raising awareness about sustainable practices and the importance of protecting India’s fragile coastal areas. From the shores of Arunachal Pradesh to Kanyakumari, the ICG coordinated massive clean-up operations, ensuring active citizen engagement in environmental stewardship.

#ICGCoastalCleanup, #InternationalCoastalCleanup, #SwachhBharatAbhiyan, #SwachhtaHiSeva, #MarineConservation, #BeachCleanupIndia, #VolunteerInitiative, #EnvironmentIndia, Observed globally on the third Saturday of September, International Coastal Cleanup is spearheaded by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and the South Asia Co-operative Environment Programme (SACEP). India, under the national coordination of ICG since 2006, has consistently contributed to these efforts, aligning with the goals of Swachh Bharat Abhiyan to safeguard the country’s 11,000 km coastline.

Participants collected and segregated plastic waste, discarded fishing gear, and other debris from beaches, rivers, and estuaries, ensuring proper disposal and recycling wherever possible. Special awareness sessions were conducted to educate citizens about the environmental hazards of marine pollution and the need for sustainable consumption patterns.

The ICG’s initiative has strengthened collaboration between government agencies, local bodies, NGOs, and educational institutions, fostering a culture of community participation in environmental conservation. The drive not only enhanced cleanliness along the coastline but also highlighted the critical role of citizens in protecting marine biodiversity.

With continued efforts in coastal protection and citizen engagement, ICC-2025 sets a benchmark for future initiatives, demonstrating India’s commitment to environmental sustainability and the broader Swachh Bharat mission.
