Inclement Weather to Persist in J&K Till Feb 7: MET

RR Team, January 31, 2026January 31, 2026
Jammu and Kashmir is set to witness an extended spell of unsettled weather till February 7, with the Meteorological Department forecasting cloudy conditions, intermittent rain and snowfall across many parts of the Union Territory. The advisory comes as night temperatures dipped below freezing in several areas, even as daytime temperatures showed marginal improvement following the end of the harsh winter phase known locally as ‘Chillai Kalan’.

According to official data, the ski resort of Gulmarg emerged as the coldest place in the Valley, recording a minimum temperature of minus 6.5 degrees Celsius. Srinagar registered a low of minus 0.1 degrees Celsius, while the tourist town of Pahalgam recorded minus 2.6 degrees Celsius.

Day Temperatures Improve After Chillai Kalan

The 40-day Chillai Kalan period, traditionally the coldest phase of the Kashmiri winter, concluded on January 30. With its end, maximum temperatures have shown a gradual rise across the region. Srinagar recorded a maximum temperature of 10 degrees Celsius on Friday, while Jammu city saw a comparatively warmer day with a high of 22.1 degrees Celsius.

Despite the improvement in daytime conditions, nights continue to remain cold, particularly in higher reaches and mountainous areas. In the Jammu region, minimum temperatures were recorded at 10.1 degrees Celsius in Jammu city, 9 degrees in Katra, 4.2 degrees in Batote, 0.8 degrees in Banihal and 0.6 degrees in Bhaderwah.

Weather Forecast for the Coming Days

The MET department has predicted generally cloudy weather with light to moderate rain and snowfall in higher reaches on January 31 and February 1. Thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds are also likely at several places during this period, prompting authorities to issue precautionary advisories.

For February 2 and 3, the forecast suggests continued cloudy conditions with light rain or snowfall, particularly in elevated areas. From February 4 to the evening of February 6, the weather is expected to turn partly cloudy, offering brief relief. However, February 7 may again witness cloudy skies with light precipitation at a few locations.

From February 8 to February 10, the MET department has forecast dry weather across Jammu and Kashmir, which could help restore normalcy in daily life and travel.

Advisories Issued for Farmers and Travellers

In view of the prevailing weather conditions, an advisory has been issued to farmers across the Union Territory, urging them to suspend agricultural activities until February 7. The advisory aims to prevent crop damage and ensure the safety of those engaged in farming-related work.

Residents living in avalanche-prone areas have been advised to exercise caution and avoid unnecessary movement, especially during periods of snowfall and strong winds. Travellers and transporters have also been urged to stay updated on road conditions.

The traffic department has advised commuters to contact official control rooms to check the latest status of the Srinagar-Jammu National Highway before undertaking any journey, as weather-induced disruptions remain a possibility.

Late Snowfall Brings Relief to Water Concerns

Although much of the Chillai Kalan period passed without significant precipitation, its closing days brought heavy snowfall in higher reaches of Jammu and Kashmir. This late spell of snow has eased concerns among locals about potential water shortages during the upcoming summer months.

Snowfall during winter plays a crucial role in replenishing perennial water reservoirs in the mountains. These reserves sustain rivers, streams and springs during the warmer months, making the recent snowfall particularly significant for the region’s water security.
