India Advances AI Self-Reliance with National LLM by 2025

RR Team, October 11, 2025October 11, 2025
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) hosted pre-summit events at India Mobile Congress (IMC) 2025 in New Delhi on October 10, setting the stage for the upcoming India–AI Impact Summit 2026. The initiative highlights India’s push toward AI self-reliance and the launch of a National Large Language Model (LLM) by the end of 2025.
Addressing the inaugural session, Secretary MeitY Shri S. Krishnan stated that India is adopting frugal, innovative, and inclusive approaches to digital transformation. “Our model ensures accessibility, resource efficiency, and global replicability, especially for the Global South,” he added. The sessions brought together leaders from government, industry, academia, and international institutions to explore AI for inclusive, safe, and sustainable growth.

Key Panels on India’s AI Roadmap

The pre-summit featured four high-level panels:

  • AI in Telecom for Social and Economic Impact: Discussed transforming telecom infrastructure and connectivity to benefit citizens and businesses.
  • Building Trustworthy AI in Telecom: Focused on safe, transparent, and people-centric AI adoption.
  • Building India’s AI Workforce Advantage: Explored strategies to develop an inclusive and future-ready AI talent ecosystem.
  • AI for Inclusive Growth and Social Empowerment: Highlighted AI-driven innovation for equity and societal benefits.
Additional Secretary MeitY and CEO of IndiaAI, Shri Abhishek Singh, emphasized the availability of 38,000 GPUs at ₹65/hour and the involvement of 12 companies in developing foundation models. “Our National LLM aims to reduce dependence on foreign systems and ensure India’s AI sovereignty by year-end,” he said.

COO IndiaAI Mission, Smt Kavita Bhatia, highlighted AI’s transformative role in telecom, from spectrum management and predictive maintenance to customer engagement and fraud detection. She stressed the importance of trustworthy AI for resilient rural connectivity and new service development across sectors such as financial inclusion.

Industry and Academic Participation

Participants included representatives from Reliance Jio, TCS, Tanla Platforms, BharatGPT-Corover.ai, AWS, AMD, C-Dot, BITS Pilani, Google, Airtel, Netweb Technologies, UNESCO, Truminds Software Systems, and Microsoft. The MeitY Pavilion at IMC was recognized as Best Exhibitor – Government for showcasing India’s AI journey and the upcoming Summit.

India–AI Impact Summit 2026

The India–AI Impact Summit 2026, scheduled for February 19–20 at Bharat Mandapam, New Delhi, will convene global leaders to advance responsible AI design and deployment. The Summit’s vision revolves around three guiding principles – People, Planet, and Progress – and seven thematic Chakras addressing human capital, inclusion, trustworthy AI, resilience, innovation, science, and economic growth.

The Summit aims to showcase India’s AI model as globally replicable, promoting inclusive growth, social development, and sustainable innovation while enabling equitable access to AI resources.
