India, Bhutan Ink MoU to Boost Agriculture Cooperation

RR Team, August 30, 2025August 30, 2025
India and Bhutan have taken another step forward in their longstanding partnership by signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on technical cooperation in agriculture and allied sectors. The agreement was signed in Thimphu by Shri Devesh Chaturvedi, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare, Government of India, and Mr. Thinley Namgyel, Secretary, Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock, Royal Government of Bhutan.

The MoU marks a significant milestone in bilateral relations, reflecting the shared vision of both nations to achieve food security, promote sustainable agriculture, and enhance rural prosperity. It provides a framework for collaboration in areas such as agricultural research and innovation, livestock health and production, post-harvest management, value chain development, and the exchange of skills and expertise.

First Joint Technical Working Group Meeting

Following the signing of the MoU, the first meeting of the Joint Technical Working Group (JTWG) was convened. Both sides agreed on the Terms of Reference for the group and identified priority areas for immediate cooperation. The meeting was hailed as a key milestone in advancing agricultural ties between the two countries.

Shri Chaturvedi highlighted India’s agricultural priorities and shared initiatives introduced by the government, including the use of digital technologies, climate-resilient farming practices, risk mitigation mechanisms, and improved credit access for farmers. These efforts, he noted, could offer valuable insights for Bhutan as it strengthens its own agricultural sector.

Areas of Collaboration

During the JTWG discussions, both countries identified key sectors for collaboration, including:

  • Agriculture and crop diversification
  • Livestock health and production
  • Agricultural marketing and cooperatives
  • Food processing and post-harvest management
  • Seed development and quality assurance
  • Research, technology exchange, and innovation
  • Capacity building and training programs

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The Indian Agriculture Secretary’s visit to Bhutan reflects the tradition of close bilateral exchanges between the two neighbors. Both sides agreed to hold the next JTWG meeting in India at a mutually convenient date. This ongoing cooperation underscores the trust and partnership that India and Bhutan continue to nurture in their shared quest for sustainable agricultural development.
