India Boosts Fertilizer Security with 73% Domestic Supply

RR Team, January 10, 2026January 10, 2026
India marked a major milestone in agricultural self-reliance in 2025 as domestic fertilizer production met nearly 73 percent of the country’s total requirement, significantly reducing dependence on imports. The achievement reflects the steady progress of the Atmanirbhar Bharat mission and underscores the government’s sustained efforts to strengthen fertilizer security for millions of farmers.

According to official data released by the Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers, total domestic production of fertilizers reached an all-time high of 524.62 lakh tonnes in 2025. This includes key nutrients such as urea, DAP, NPKs, and SSP, which are critical for maintaining soil health and ensuring stable crop yields across the country.

Steady Rise in Fertilizer Production

The growth in domestic fertilizer output has been consistent over the past five years. Production stood at 433.29 lakh tonnes in 2021, rising to 467.87 lakh tonnes in 2022. A sharp increase was recorded in 2023 when output crossed the 500-lakh-tonne mark at 507.93 lakh tonnes.

This upward trajectory continued in 2024 with production reaching 509.57 lakh tonnes before accelerating further in 2025. The sustained expansion highlights the strengthening of India’s fertilizer manufacturing ecosystem and the effectiveness of policy interventions undertaken by the government.

Reduced Import Dependence

Meeting nearly three-fourths of national fertilizer demand through domestic production marks a significant reduction in import dependence, particularly amid volatile global markets. The government has adopted a strategy of long-term supply agreements for critical raw materials and diversified sourcing to safeguard against global supply disruptions.

These measures have insulated Indian agriculture from international price shocks and logistical uncertainties, ensuring uninterrupted availability of fertilizers during crucial sowing seasons. Officials note that fertilizer security is now viewed as a strategic pillar of national food security.

Revival of Plants and Indigenous Manufacturing

The increase in production has been driven by the commissioning of new fertilizer plants, revival of previously closed units, and a renewed push for indigenous manufacturing. Several dormant urea units have been brought back into operation, adding substantial capacity to the domestic supply chain.

Alongside capacity expansion, the government has focused on ensuring assured availability of raw materials such as natural gas and phosphatic inputs. This integrated approach has improved operational stability and long-term sustainability of fertilizer manufacturing units.

Support for Farmers and Agriculture

Timely and affordable access to fertilizers remains a core objective of government policy. Higher domestic production has helped stabilize supplies and support the continued rollout of subsidized fertilizers to farmers across states.

Officials believe that enhanced fertilizer security directly contributes to higher farm productivity, income stability, and rural economic growth. The measures also align with broader efforts to promote balanced nutrient use and sustainable agricultural practices.

Atmanirbhar Bharat in Action

The record production figures are widely seen as a tangible outcome of the Atmanirbhar Bharat vision, which emphasizes self-reliance across critical sectors. By strengthening domestic capabilities, India is gradually transforming from a major fertilizer importer into a more resilient and self-sufficient producer.

The government has reiterated its commitment to further strengthening fertilizer security through policy reforms, infrastructure investments, and innovation. These efforts aim to ensure long-term agricultural growth while reducing vulnerability to external shocks.
