High-Level Meeting in New Delhi
On 29th January 2026, Hon’ble Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare and Chemicals & Fertilizers, Shri JP Nadda, met with a high-level Canadian delegation led by Mr. Tim Hodgson, Minister of Natural Resources, Canada, in New Delhi. The meeting emphasized strengthening bilateral ties in potash supply, critical for enhancing soil fertility and balanced nutrient application in India.
Canada’s Role in Potash Supply
Highlighting Canada’s importance as a reliable supplier of Muriate of Potash (MOP), Shri Nadda noted that India imports approximately 25% of its MOP requirements from Canada. He also underscored Gujarat State Fertilizers and Chemicals Ltd (GSFC)’s investment of CAD 49.68 million in Karnalyte Resources Inc., a Canadian potash development firm. GSFC holds a 47.73% equity stake, providing India with a strategic share in this critical resource project.
Investment and Technology Collaboration
Mr. Hodgson reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to supporting India’s agricultural growth and emphasized the significance of potash in global food security. He outlined Canada’s new investment-friendly policies, noting that Indian investments in natural resources could be matched by the Canadian government. Both nations also explored technical collaboration in mining and potash exploration, signaling a roadmap for sustainable fertilizer security.
Long-Term Fertilizer Security Strategy
The meeting addressed India’s long-term strategy for potash security, including expanding supply contracts and encouraging joint technological initiatives. The discussions reinforced mutual interests in strengthening the fertilizer sector, promoting economic cooperation, and ensuring long-term food and agriculture security.
