India marked its 76th Republic Day on January 26, 2025, with a grand parade at Kartavya Path in New Delhi. This year held special significance as it marked the 75th anniversary of the adoption of the Indian Constitution in 1950.
Highlights of the Celebrations
Presidential Salute: President Droupadi Murmu took the ceremonial salute, accompanied by Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto as the chief guest. This marked a significant moment, as Indonesia’s first president, Sukarno, was the chief guest at India’s inaugural Republic Day in 1950.
Parade Leadership: The parade was led by Lieutenant General Bhavnish Kumar, Parade Commander and General Officer Commanding, Delhi Area. Major General Sumit Mehta, Chief of Staff, HQ Delhi Area, served as the Second-in-Command.
Gallantry Awardees: The parade showcased the recipients of India’s highest military honors, including the Param Vir Chakra and Ashok Chakra awardees.
Cultural and Military Display
The event was a blend of military prowess and cultural heritage, with contingents representing all three branches of the armed forces, vibrant tableaux from different states, and cultural performances. The Indonesian National Armed Forces also participated, showcasing their discipline and pride.
Aerial Show: The Indian Air Force presented a stunning aerial display, with Mi-17 helicopters showering flower petals over the venue.
Historic Buggy Ride: President Murmu and President Subianto arrived in a traditional horse-drawn buggy, reinstated last year after 40 years, accompanied by the President’s Bodyguard.
State Celebrations
Across the country, states marked the day with flag-hoisting ceremonies and cultural events:
Tamil Nadu: Governor R.N. Ravi and Chief Minister M.K. Stalin presided over celebrations featuring a march past, military equipment displays, and cultural performances celebrating Tamil heritage.
Maharashtra: CM Devendra Fadnavis emphasized unity and democracy while unfurling the tricolor in Mumbai.
Andhra Pradesh: Governor S. Abdul Nazeer and CM N. Chandrababu Naidu urged citizens to uphold the Constitution’s ideals while envisioning a developed India by 2047.
Honoring Excellence
President Murmu approved 93 gallantry awards, including 67 Sena Medals, 14 Shaurya Chakras, and 2 Kirti Chakras, recognizing the bravery and sacrifice of the armed forces.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended greetings, celebrating the nation’s progress while urging citizens to preserve constitutional ideals and work towards a prosperous future. The day concluded with a renewed commitment to unity, democracy, and the vision of a stronger India.
