India Celebrates International Tea Day with Heartfelt Convention Showcasing the Rich Legacy and Bright Future of Indian Tea

RR Team, May 21, 2025May 21, 2025

The spirit of International Tea Day was celebrated with warmth and pride at Vanijya Bhawan in New Delhi on May 21, 2025, where the Ministry of Commerce & Industry hosted a vibrant convention dedicated to India’s beloved beverage. The event brought together a diverse group of stakeholders from across the tea industry for thoughtful discussions, interactive experiences, and a collective vision for the future of Indian tea.

Minister of State for Commerce & Industry, Shri Jitin Prasada, attended the event as the Chief Guest and delivered an encouraging keynote address. He acknowledged the deep-rooted cultural and economic significance of tea in India and emphasized the need to modernize its image through innovative branding and marketing strategies. His call to action for the industry to reach greater heights in global exports and develop new tea varieties aimed at younger and niche audiences resonated deeply with those present. He also highlighted the importance of ensuring fair and supportive practices across the entire supply chain—from the growers in the fields to the tea drinkers at home.

Secretary of the Ministry, Shri Sunil Barthwal, added a personal touch by sharing fond memories from his travels to tea-growing regions like Assam, Darjeeling, Kangra, and Uttarakhand. His reflections underscored the unique beauty and character of India’s diverse tea landscapes. He called for a greater push toward “tea literacy” among the public to help more people appreciate the unique qualities of Indian teas.

A key highlight of the event was a tea tasting session led by a professional tea taster, who shared insights into the art and science of tasting tea. The session was both informative and entertaining, allowing dignitaries like the Minister and the Commerce Secretary to try their hand at identifying subtle flavors and aromas, much to the delight of the audience.

The day also featured a series of insightful panel discussions covering a range of topics such as organic and sustainable teas, global consumption trends, and strategies to engage younger generations with modern tea offerings. Experts shared innovative ideas on how India can strengthen its position in the global tea market through quality improvements, dynamic branding, and storytelling around regional flavors.

Adding charm to the convention was the India Tea Appreciation Zone, where tea producers, exporters, startups, farmer producer organizations, and small tea growers showcased an array of exquisite teas. Visitors had the chance to sample everything from classic Darjeeling and robust Assam teas to creative blends and flavored infusions. The display highlighted the richness of India’s tea culture and the endless possibilities it offers to both traditionalists and adventurous tea lovers alike. The appreciation zone buzzed with activity throughout the day, proving once again how deeply cherished Indian tea is—both at home and abroad.

The event was not just a celebration, but a hopeful and thoughtful reminder of the journey of Indian tea and the people behind it. It brought renewed energy to the industry and left everyone with a shared sense of pride and optimism for the future of India’s tea legacy.
