India Crosses 34,000 GPUs, Marks AI Breakthrough

RR Team, May 31, 2025June 25, 2025

IndiaAI Crosses 34,000 GPUs, Fuels Indigenous AI Drive

In a major leap toward technological self-reliance, India’s national AI compute capacity has now crossed 34,000 GPUs. This is not just a statistic—it marks a vital step in India’s quest to become a global leader in artificial intelligence, backed by inclusivity and innovation.

Democratizing AI for Every Indian

At the ‘IndiaAI – Make AI in India, Make AI Work for India’ event in New Delhi, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted the progress of the IndiaAI Mission.

He emphasized Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision—that technology should be a tool for everyone, not a luxury for a few. This mission aims to empower startups, researchers, and citizens alike with accessible AI tools and infrastructure.

Building India’s Own AI Models

Three new AI startups were selected to build indigenous foundation models:

  • Soket AI: Developing an open-source 120-billion parameter model focused on defense, healthcare, and education.

  • Gnani AI: Creating a voice-based multilingual model with real-time processing capabilities.

  • Gan AI: Building a text-to-speech multilingual model that aims to exceed global standards.

These efforts will complement the work of Sarvam AI, which has already launched models like Sarvam-1 and is now building an advanced LLM for public applications such as “AI4Pragati” and “2047: Citizen Connect.”

Scaling Compute Infrastructure

India’s compute backbone has strengthened significantly. With the recent addition of 15,916 GPUs, the total pool now stands at 34,333 GPUs.

This infrastructure will serve as a shared national resource, enabling even small startups and public researchers to build and deploy AI solutions at scale—something that was previously inaccessible.

Open Datasets and Collaboration

The IndiaAI initiative is also investing in data accessibility. Over 367 datasets have been uploaded to AI Kosh, a central platform to support model training and AI research in India.

This open-data approach will foster grassroots innovation and reduce dependency on foreign platforms, reversing the trend of brain drain and retaining talent within the country.

AI for Cybersecurity and Public Good

One of the event highlights was the announcement of winners from the IndiaAI I4C CyberGuard Hackathon. Organized with the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre, this hackathon produced AI tools capable of:

  • Interpreting handwritten FIRs,

  • Analyzing screenshots and voice messages,

  • Supporting smarter and faster cybercrime detection.

Such solutions promise real-world impact by improving public safety and justice delivery.

Industry Joins the Mission

Several private partners, including CyFuture India, Vensysco Technologies, and Netmagic IT Services, have come on board. These companies will offer AI compute services in multiple configurations and price points, expanding the ecosystem through public-private partnerships.

Towards a Humane and Inclusive AI Future

IndiaAI is not just a tech mission—it’s a vision for an inclusive digital future. Every GPU added, every model built, and every dataset shared brings India closer to becoming an AI powerhouse rooted in public service and social good.

It’s a national effort—not just to lead in AI, but to humanize it.
