Describing the Ukraine conflict as a global security threat, the EU chief added, “This war carries global security consequences and undermines economic stability. It poses risks to the entire world.”
Strengthening EU-India Strategic Ties
Von der Leyen also discussed the future of EU–India relations, mentioning plans to adopt a “joint strategic agenda” at the next EU–India summit, tentatively scheduled for early 2026. She reiterated the commitment to conclude the long-pending Free Trade Agreement (FTA) negotiations by the end of this year, stressing the need for tangible progress now.
The FTA talks aim to enhance trade, investment protection, and intellectual property agreements. Both sides agreed on February 28, 2025, to finalise the deal within the year.
India-EU FTA Negotiations
The EU-India FTA process resumed in June 2022 after an eight-year pause. India has consistently sought a “decisive conclusion” to the negotiations. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar underscored this objective during a media briefing with his German counterpart Johann Wadephul, who visited India recently.
India will host the 13th round of FTA negotiations in New Delhi on September 8, following the previous round in Brussels earlier this year. The agreement covers market access, investment protection, and geographical indications, aiming to boost bilateral trade and investment relations.
FTA talks were initially stalled in 2013 due to differences over market access. India’s push to accelerate discussions reflects its strategic priority to strengthen economic and diplomatic ties with the European Union.
Global Implications
India’s diplomatic role in the Ukraine crisis positions it as a key player in global peacebuilding. Its engagement is closely watched by EU nations and other international stakeholders, given the geopolitical and economic ramifications of the war. The ongoing FTA negotiations further underscore India’s significance as a stable economic partner on the global stage.
By balancing its engagement with Ukraine and Russia while advancing trade ties with Europe, India is charting a path that could influence both regional stability and international commerce.
