India Hits 100 GW Solar PV Module Capacity Under ALMM

RR Team, August 14, 2025August 13, 2025
India has reached a historic milestone by achieving 100 GW of solar PV module manufacturing capacity under the Approved List of Models and Manufacturers (ALMM). This remarkable growth reflects the country’s commitment to building a self-reliant solar ecosystem, supporting the vision of Atmanirbhar Bharat, and advancing global clean energy goals.

Rapid Expansion in Solar Manufacturing

Union Minister of New and Renewable Energy, Shri Pralhad Joshi, highlighted this achievement, stating, “India has achieved a historic milestone – 100 GW Solar PV Module Manufacturing Capacity under ALMM, up from just 2.3 GW in 2014. With initiatives like the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules, we are creating a robust and self-reliant solar manufacturing ecosystem.” This growth strengthens India’s path to 500 GW non-fossil fuel capacity by 2030.

Government Initiatives Driving Growth

The Government of India has implemented multiple initiatives to make the nation self-reliant in solar PV manufacturing. The PLI Scheme for High-Efficiency Solar Modules and measures to ensure a level playing field for Indian manufacturers have catalyzed a massive increase in manufacturing capacity from 2.3 GW in 2014 to over 100 GW today.

The ALMM Order, issued by the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) on 2nd January 2019, initially listed about 8.2 GW of capacity in 2021. Today, over 100 GW is registered under ALMM, with the number of manufacturers rising from 21 to 100 operating across 123 units.

Industry Participation and Technological Adoption

Both established players and new entrants have contributed to this milestone. Many manufacturers have adopted high-efficiency technologies and vertical integration, creating a diverse and competitive ecosystem. This ensures that India can meet domestic solar energy needs while also serving international markets. The achievement also demonstrates the successful collaboration between industry, state governments, and central authorities.

Future Outlook

MNRE remains committed to strengthening India’s solar manufacturing ecosystem through continuous policy support, infrastructure development, and innovation. The Ministry continues to engage with stakeholders to ensure India’s solar journey remains inclusive, competitive, and future-ready.
