India Hosts 3GPP RAN Meetings on 6G in Bengaluru

RR Team, August 27, 2025August 27, 2025
In a historic first, India is hosting the 3GPP Radio Access Networks (RAN) Working Group meetings in Whitefield, Bengaluru. The meetings, held from 25–29 August 2025, bring together the world’s top telecom researchers and companies to shape the foundation of 6G standardization under Release 20, while finalizing Release 19 specifications for 5G Advanced.

Global Significance of the Bengaluru Meetings

With more than 1,500 delegates from 50+ countries, this is the highest-ever global participation in any 3GPP working group meeting. Delegates represent major telecom firms, research bodies, and universities, making this a landmark moment in the evolution of global mobile networks.

The event is supported by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) and hosted by the Telecommunications Standards Development Society, India (TSDSI). TSDSI is India’s recognized Standards Development Organization and one of seven global organizational partners of 3GPP.

India’s Role in Global Telecom Standards

DoT’s active support underlines the government’s commitment to making India a global leader in next-generation communications. A DoT delegation is taking part in the discussions, ensuring India’s strategic interests are represented in framing the specifications that will govern future mobile connectivity.

Hosting the meetings in Bengaluru enables Indian researchers, startups, and academic institutions to participate locally. This removes the barrier of costly international travel and ensures that domestic talent can directly contribute to global telecom standards.

Why 6G Matters

3GPP specifications form the backbone of mobile networks worldwide. While Release 19 pushes the limits of 5G Advanced, Release 20 is set to define global 6G standards. These standards will shape future technologies such as ultra-low latency communication, AI-driven networks, and immersive applications in healthcare, manufacturing, and education.

By bringing 3GPP to India, the government signals a shift in global standard-setting dynamics. Emerging technology leaders like India will now have a stronger voice in shaping how 6G evolves across the world.

Boosting Innovation and Collaboration

The Bengaluru meetings are expected to spark new industry-academia collaborations. They also provide a platform for Indian companies to align with global developments in real-time. This inclusive approach will strengthen India’s research ecosystem, encourage domestic innovation, and attract global investments in telecom R&D.

According to experts, the event could be a turning point for India’s telecom journey. It positions the country not just as a technology adopter but as a technology creator influencing global standards.

Key Highlights of the 3GPP Meetings

  • First time 3GPP RAN meetings are hosted in India.
  • Over 1,500 delegates from more than 50 countries participating.
  • Discussions on Release 20, the foundation of 6G standards.
  • Finalization of Release 19 for advancing 5G networks.
  • Increased opportunities for Indian researchers and companies to contribute.

India’s hosting of these meetings is a clear sign of its growing influence in the global telecom standards ecosystem. The decisions taken here will shape the future of 6G networks worldwide, and India is at the heart of that process.
