India Issues Travel Advisory Amid Thailand-Cambodia Clashes

RR Team, July 25, 2025July 25, 2025

New Delhi, July 25, 2025: As tensions flare along the Thailand-Cambodia border, the Indian Embassy in Thailand has issued a stark travel advisory. Indian citizens have been strongly urged to avoid travel to seven conflict-hit provinces in Thailand.

This follows a violent escalation in the border region, where at least 16 people, including children, have died. The situation remains volatile. Over 58,000 people have been displaced in Thailand and thousands more in Cambodia.

Why Has India Issued This Advisory?

The Indian government acted swiftly following reports of intense armed confrontations between Thai and Cambodian forces. The embassy in Bangkok released a statement urging Indians to avoid travel to:

  • Ubon Ratchathani
  • Surin
  • Sisaket
  • Buriram
  • Sa Kaeo
  • Chanthaburi
  • Trat

The statement reads: “In view of the situation near the Thailand-Cambodia border, all Indian travellers to Thailand are advised to check updates from Thai official sources, including the TAT Newsroom.”

How Bad Is the Situation?

Very bad. Fighting broke out on Thursday and intensified on Friday. Thai and Cambodian troops exchanged gunfire, rocket attacks, and airstrikes. Civilians are fleeing in massive numbers. Families have left homes and businesses behind to escape the crossfire.

According to the Thai military, Cambodian troops fired BM-21 rocket launchers at Thai positions. Thailand responded with “appropriate supporting fire,” which included airstrikes across the border.

Heavy Casualties, Children Among the Dead

The Health Ministry of Thailand confirmed that over 15 soldiers and 30 civilians have been injured. Sadly, children are among the 16 reported dead. Hospitals in Ubon Ratchathani and Sisaket are overwhelmed.

Cambodian officials reported that 4,000 residents were evacuated from areas near the border. The Thai side has moved over 50,000 civilians from conflict zones to safer shelters inland.

Political Tensions Are Rising

This violent flare-up comes just weeks after a Cambodian soldier died in a border skirmish. Things escalated quickly when a landmine explosion injured Thai troops earlier this week. That incident led to both countries downgrading diplomatic ties.

On Friday, Thailand’s acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai told reporters, “The situation could escalate into a state of war. It’s already a confrontation involving heavy weapons.”

India’s Response: Caution, Not Panic

India is not evacuating its citizens yet, but has urged caution. Travelers already in Thailand should stay in contact with the Indian Embassy in Bangkok. They must also monitor updates from Thai public safety agencies.

Travel agencies in India are already canceling or rescheduling tour packages to eastern Thailand. Flight bookings to Bangkok remain unaffected for now, but rail and bus services to affected provinces are suspended.

Impact on Indian Citizens and Tourists

Thailand is one of the most popular destinations for Indian tourists. Over 2 million Indians visited Thailand in 2024 alone. With this advisory, travel agencies fear a sharp drop in tourism bookings.

Many Indian nationals in Bangkok and Pattaya have expressed concern. A few who had planned visits to Isan region (which includes Sisaket and Surin) have canceled travel. “Safety comes first,” said Priya R., an Indian tourist who cut short her trip.

What Should Travelers Do Now?

If you are currently in Thailand or planning to visit soon, here’s what you should do:

  • Avoid all non-essential travel to the listed provinces.
  • Register with the Indian Embassy in Bangkok at the earliest.
  • Keep your documents and emergency contacts ready.
  • Follow official updates from the Embassy and TAT Newsroom.

Conclusion: Safety Above All

The India Thailand advisory is a wake-up call. The Indo-Pacific region, though rich in culture and travel appeal, is not immune to political conflict. Travelers must remain alert. Diplomacy may take time, but personal safety cannot wait.

India’s swift advisory highlights its commitment to citizen safety abroad. As the Thailand-Cambodia conflict unfolds, staying informed and cautious is the best defense.
