India has taken a historic step toward mineral self-reliance with the launch of its first-ever Exploration Licence (EL) auction in Goa. Organized by the Ministry of Mines in collaboration with the Government of Goa, the event was graced by Union Minister for Coal and Mines, Shri G. Kishan Reddy, and Chief Minister of Goa, Dr. Pramod Sawant. The occasion marked not only the auction of 13 critical mineral blocks but also the inauguration of the AI Hackathon 2025, focusing on “Mineral Targeting using AI.”
The auction aims to unlock untapped resources like Rare Earth Elements (REE), Zinc, Diamond, Copper, and Platinum Group Elements (PGE) through a transparent online bidding process. This move is expected to accelerate systematic mineral exploration, reduce dependence on imports, and boost private sector participation. Union Minister Shri G. Kishan Reddy emphasized that this reform will play a crucial role in discovering deep-seated and critical minerals while strengthening India’s clean energy and industrial ambitions.
Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant expressed pride in Goa’s rich mining legacy and highlighted the state’s commitment to responsible, technology-driven mineral development. He acknowledged the auction as a game-changer that will create new opportunities for sustainable mining while ensuring ecological balance.
The event also saw the launch of the AI Hackathon 2025, an innovative platform designed to harness artificial intelligence for mineral targeting. Participants will leverage datasets like geophysics, geochemistry, remote sensing, and borehole data to identify hidden mineral-rich zones. This initiative is expected to revolutionize India’s exploration ecosystem and promote data-driven mineral discovery.
In recognition of private sector participation, the Union Minister and the Chief Minister awarded certificates to three newly notified Private Exploration Agencies: M/s Earthenviro Lab Private Limited, M/s Ocean Drilling and Exploration Pvt. Ltd, and M/s Enkay Enviro Services Pvt. Ltd. This move aims to encourage more private players to actively contribute to India’s mineral exploration landscape.
A review meeting chaired by Shri G. Kishan Reddy, with the participation of Goa’s Chief Minister and other key stakeholders, focused on promoting sustainable mining practices, integrating technology in exploration, and addressing environmental concerns. The meeting brought together representatives from private companies, public sector units, and environmental experts to discuss strategies for balancing mineral development with ecological preservation.
The event concluded with a visit to the Sanguelim reclaimed mine, showcasing Goa’s efforts toward sustainable and responsible mining practices. This landmark initiative not only strengthens India’s mineral independence but also paves the way for innovation and sustainable development in the mining sector.
