India’s Renewable Energy Achievements
Highlighting milestones, Shri Joshi noted that India has achieved 50% of its electricity capacity from non-fossil fuel sources as of 2025, five years ahead of its Paris Agreement NDC target. India’s renewable capacity now exceeds 266 GW, positioning the country as a global leader in renewable energy deployment. The Minister reiterated India’s targets of 500 GW of non-fossil installed power capacity by 2030 and achieving Net Zero emissions by 2070.
To strengthen energy infrastructure, India is deploying advanced energy storage solutions, modernising grids, and developing Green Energy Corridors. Innovative projects such as hybrid and round-the-clock renewable energy initiatives, along with expanded domestic manufacturing of solar, wind, batteries, and electrolysers, are driving both national self-reliance and global competitiveness.
People-Centric Energy Transition
Shri Joshi emphasised that India’s energy transition is not only about capacity addition but also about people empowerment. Through programs like PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana, 2.5 million households have installed rooftop solar systems, targeting 10 million by 2027. Similarly, under PM-KUSUM, 2.17 million farmers have benefited from solarisation of agricultural feeders and diesel pump replacements.
Global Cooperation and Investment
The Union Minister highlighted that India alone will require nearly USD 300 billion investment by 2030 for renewable energy, storage, green hydrogen, grids, and manufacturing, underscoring opportunities for international collaboration. Joshi called for stronger multilateral cooperation, technology transfer, access to low-cost finance, and capacity building, especially to support developing nations and Small Island Developing States in accelerating clean energy adoption.
He also met with UAE Minister of Climate Change, Dr. Amna bint Abdullah Al Dahak, to enhance India-UAE collaboration on climate action, renewable energy, and food security. Discussions focused on scalable initiatives in manufacturing, energy storage, decentralized solutions, and blended finance, aligned with UAE’s Net Zero 2050 goals.
IRENA and International Leadership
Shri Joshi congratulated the Dominican Republic on assuming the presidency of IRENA and extended best wishes to the Vice Presidents including Kenya, Solomon Islands, Spain, and Antigua and Barbuda. He reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting IRENA and working with member countries, sharing India’s expertise, institutions, and experience to accelerate a globally equitable energy transition.
The 16th IRENA Assembly, held from 10–12 January 2026, focuses on “Powering Humanity: Renewable Energy for Shared Prosperity,” bringing together global leaders and energy policymakers to advance sustainable and inclusive renewable energy strategies worldwide.
