RR Team, June 13, 2025

India and Mongolia Strengthen Defence Ties as Nomadic Elephant 2025 Concludes

The 17th edition of the India-Mongolia Joint Military Exercise NOMADIC ELEPHANT concluded on 13 June 2025 in Ulaanbaatar, marking yet another significant milestone in India’s expanding defence diplomacy.

Held over two weeks, the exercise saw active participation from 45 personnel of the Indian Army, primarily from the ARUNACHAL SCOUTS battalion, and their Mongolian counterparts.

Strengthening Interoperability and Strategic Trust

The joint military drill focused on enhancing interoperability between Indian and Mongolian forces under United Nations peacekeeping mandates. Troops operated in semi-urban and mountainous terrains, simulating semi-conventional combat scenarios.

This hands-on collaboration fostered tactical cohesion and improved mutual understanding of operating procedures in challenging terrains.

High-Level Representation at the Closing Ceremony

The closing ceremony was graced by Defence Secretary Shri Rajesh Kumar Singh and Lieutenant General Pushpendra Singh, Director General Operational Logistics and Strategic Movement.

Addressing the soldiers, the Defence Secretary praised the professionalism, dedication, and discipline of the Indian contingent. He stated:

“Exercise Nomadic Elephant reaffirms the deep-rooted ties, trust, and cultural affinity that bind India and Mongolia. It reflects our shared vision for peace and regional stability.”

He also emphasized that India’s active participation showcases its growing role as a global peacekeeping leader, in alignment with its commitment to United Nations missions.

Symbol of India’s Expanding Defence Diplomacy

Exercises like Nomadic Elephant and the upcoming Khaan Quest 2025 are vital pillars of India’s strategic engagement with Mongolia. They reinforce India’s Act East Policy and bolster military diplomacy in Asia.

Khaan Quest 2025, a multinational exercise beginning 14 June, will further extend India’s collaborative defence footprint. The Indian Army will also participate in this high-profile event, showcasing India’s sustained efforts to build regional and global partnerships.

Key Objectives of Nomadic Elephant 2025

  • Improve coordination in semi-conventional operations

  • Sharpen skills in mountain warfare

  • Exchange tactical expertise under UN mission scenarios

  • Build mutual respect and strategic interoperability

These objectives aim to prepare forces for real-world conflict zones while encouraging peace-centric defence training.

Cultural and Geopolitical Significance

India and Mongolia share more than military cooperation. They are united by historical Buddhist linkages, democratic values, and geopolitical priorities.

This joint military initiative also strengthens India’s presence in Northeast Asia, an area of increasing strategic importance amid global realignments.

India’s Role in Regional Peacekeeping

India has long been one of the largest troop contributors to UN Peacekeeping Missions. Its consistent engagement in such joint military exercises illustrates its intention to lead by example in conflict resolution and humanitarian operations.

Nomadic Elephant 2025 is a demonstration of India’s operational readiness and diplomatic maturity in a multipolar world.

Conclusion: Peace Through Partnership

Exercise Nomadic Elephant 2025 not only sharpened military capabilities but also cemented the emotional and strategic ties between India and Mongolia. It set the tone for future collaborations and confirmed that peacekeeping is strongest when nations train together.

India’s role in such exercises goes beyond defence—it represents a commitment to a secure, stable, and peaceful global order.
