External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar reiterated India’s commitment to facilitating the legitimate return of undocumented Indian immigrants from abroad, particularly the United States. Speaking to reporters on Wednesday, Jaishankar emphasized that while India encourages legal global mobility and workplace opportunities for its citizens, it opposes illegal migration.
“We want Indian talent and skills to thrive globally. However, illegal immigration often connects with other unlawful activities, tarnishing our nation’s reputation,” he remarked.
The government is currently verifying undocumented Indians in the US who may face deportation but has not yet determined an exact figure. Previous reports suggested that India is collaborating with the US administration to address cases of around 1,80,000 individuals who are undocumented or have overstayed their visas.
During bilateral talks with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Jaishankar emphasized the importance of addressing visa delays, which can hamper the growing ties between the two nations. He noted, “If it takes over 400 days to get a visa, the relationship isn’t well-served. This issue needs resolution to promote legal mobility.”
Jaishankar also acknowledged ongoing sensitivities in the US surrounding immigration debates but maintained that India’s stance has been consistent and principled. He assured that India remains open to welcoming its citizens back through proper legal processes.
The discussions also touched upon broader mutual interests and the importance of finding solutions that strengthen legal mobility while addressing concerns over illegal migration.
