India Post Partners with IIP for Eco-Friendly Packaging

RR Team, September 30, 2025September 30, 2025
The Department of Posts (DoP), under the Ministry of Communications, has signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Indian Institute of Packaging (IIP) to promote sustainable packaging solutions and enhance the efficiency of India Post’s parcel services. The agreement was formalized at the Office of Chief Postmaster General, Maharashtra Circle, Mumbai.
The MoU was signed by Dr. Sudhir Jakhere, IPoS, APMG(BD & Mktg.), Department of Posts, and Dr. Babu Rao Guduri, Addl. Director, Indian Institute of Packaging, Mumbai. This collaboration marks a significant step in modernizing postal services while emphasizing eco-friendly practices.

Key Areas of Collaboration

The partnership will focus on developing innovative, sustainable, and cost-efficient packaging materials for India Post, replacing conventional options like corrugated boxes and cloth wraps. Special attention will be given to airworthy packaging for liquids and other delicate items.

IIP will assess DoP’s current packaging practices against global standards and provide solutions that meet international benchmarks. This includes drafting a comprehensive pricing strategy and technical guidelines on size, shape, durability, and design, ensuring scalability for nationwide implementation.

The collaboration will also create training modules for postal staff, including instructional videos and graphics, aimed at educating employees on sustainable packaging techniques.

Leveraging Expertise and Nationwide Reach

With 58 years of experience in packaging technology, IIP brings extensive expertise to the table, while India Post’s network of over 1.65 lakh post offices ensures wide implementation of these solutions. This strategic alliance will provide safer, more efficient, and environmentally responsible postal services across India.

By adopting eco-friendly materials and innovative designs, the MoU supports the government’s broader vision of environmental sustainability and modernizing public sector logistics.
