India Raises Concerns Over Deportation of Its Citizens from the U.S., Calls for Humane Treatment

RR Team, February 6, 2025February 6, 2025

India has raised concerns over the deportation of its citizens from the United States, with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar emphasizing the need for fair treatment and a humane approach to immigration issues. Addressing the matter, Jaishankar highlighted the importance of due process and dignity for those being sent back to India, many of whom have faced distressing circumstances.

The Indian government has been actively engaging with U.S. authorities to ensure that deportations are handled with sensitivity, especially in cases where individuals have lived in the U.S. for years and have families there. Reports of Indian immigrants being shackled and mistreated during deportation proceedings have caused alarm, prompting the Ministry of External Affairs to seek assurances that their rights will be protected.

At the same time, India has reiterated its commitment to addressing illegal immigration at its root. Jaishankar acknowledged that many Indians seek better opportunities abroad, sometimes through unauthorized channels, leading to complex legal and humanitarian challenges. The government has been working on measures to curb human trafficking and unauthorized migration while advocating for more legal pathways for skilled workers.

The issue has become a point of discussion in Indo-U.S. relations, as both countries navigate the balance between border security and humane immigration policies. While the U.S. has ramped up deportations under its evolving immigration enforcement strategies, India has stressed that those affected should not be treated as criminals but rather as individuals caught in difficult circumstances.

For the deportees, returning to India often comes with significant hardships, including financial struggles and social stigma. The Indian government, along with local organizations, has been trying to facilitate their reintegration by offering support services and employment assistance. However, many deportees still face uncertainty, having left behind lives they built over years.

As global migration patterns continue to evolve, India remains engaged in diplomatic efforts to protect its citizens abroad while ensuring that immigration policies reflect both security concerns and humanitarian values.
