Strong Developer-Led Adoption
Anthropic’s data shows that nearly 45.2 percent of Claude.ai usage in India is mapped to computer and mathematical tasks. Five of the top ten use cases in the country fall squarely under software and web development, indicating that Indian developers are relying on AI assistance for coding, debugging, and interface design.
The report highlights that Indian users are twice as likely as the global average to use Claude.ai for CSS, HTML, and UI styling work. They are also 1.7 times more likely to depend on the AI tool for building and debugging full-scale web applications.
Beyond Coding: Emerging AI Use Cases
While software development dominates usage, Indian users are also exploring Claude.ai in emerging technology areas. Anthropic found that Indian professionals are 1.5 times more represented than the global average in using Claude for developing AI systems such as chatbots and workflow automation tools.
Database administration and data engineering are other standout areas, with usage levels around 1.4 times higher than the global baseline. This reflects India’s expanding role in data-driven services and enterprise technology operations.
Career, Education, and Entrepreneurship
Beyond technical work, Claude.ai is increasingly being used in India for career advancement and learning. Anthropic noted that job searching, professional development, and interview preparation feature prominently among Indian use cases.
Academic work across STEM subjects and business planning for startups and small enterprises also rank high. This suggests that generative AI is becoming a multi-purpose productivity tool for students, early-stage founders, and working professionals.
High Rank, Lower Usage Intensity
Despite ranking second globally in total usage, India’s per-capita intensity of Claude.ai adoption remains relatively low. Anthropic’s AI Usage Index, which compares usage against a country’s working-age population, places India at 0.22.
This indicates that while overall numbers are high due to India’s large population, Claude.ai is still underrepresented relative to the country’s potential user base. Analysts suggest this gap could narrow rapidly as AI tools become more accessible and integrated into enterprise and government systems.
India’s Growing AI Ecosystem
India’s strong showing in Claude.ai usage aligns with broader trends in the country’s artificial intelligence ecosystem. Government-backed initiatives and policy frameworks are encouraging AI adoption across sectors, from startups to large enterprises.
What the Report Signals
Anthropic’s findings underline India’s importance as a key market for global AI companies. With developers leading adoption and newer use cases emerging rapidly, India is likely to remain central to the evolution of generative AI tools.
As access improves and enterprises scale AI deployment, India’s usage intensity could rise significantly, potentially reshaping productivity, software development, and digital innovation across the economy.
