India Sends 20 MT Fortified Rice to Papua New Guinea

RR Team, November 5, 2025November 5, 2025
The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, has achieved a new milestone by facilitating the export of 20 metric tonnes of fortified rice from Chhattisgarh to Papua New Guinea (PNG). This marks another significant step in India’s commitment to expanding its agricultural export portfolio and promoting nutrition-oriented food solutions worldwide.

Boosting India’s Agricultural Export Footprint

India has steadily enhanced its global footprint in the export of value-added agricultural products. The recent fortified rice consignment represents APEDA’s continuing efforts to support farmers, millers, and exporters from Chhattisgarh one of India’s leading rice-producing states. The initiative strengthens India’s position as a reliable supplier of high-quality, fortified food products across the globe.

Chhattisgarh has emerged as a key contributor to India’s agri-export map. Through sustained government support, local enterprises are now able to meet international demand for nutrition-rich staples. This shipment to Papua New Guinea reinforces India’s role in advancing global nutrition and food security.

Leadership Commendations and Industry Response

Shri Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, congratulated M/s Sponge Enterprises Pvt. Ltd., Raipur, the exporter behind this successful shipment. He praised the coordinated efforts of all stakeholders involved, noting that the export reflects India’s growing expertise in delivering science-based and fortified food solutions to international consumers.

“The export of fortified rice from Chhattisgarh highlights India’s commitment to quality, innovation, and nutritional advancement in the global market,” said Shri Dev. He reaffirmed APEDA’s focus on strengthening value chains, ensuring quality assurance, and promoting international collaborations to further elevate India’s global agri-trade reputation.

Supporting the sentiment, Shri Mukesh Jain, President of The Rice Exporters Association of Chhattisgarh (TREA-CG), expressed gratitude towards APEDA for its continuous facilitation. He stated that fortified rice exports are likely to expand to new global destinations, reflecting buyer confidence in India’s production capabilities.

Technology Behind Fortified Rice

Fortified rice is produced by blending rice flour with essential micronutrients like iron, folic acid, and vitamin B12. The fortified mixture is then extruded to form rice-shaped grains, which are blended with regular rice in specific proportions to enhance nutritional value. This innovation helps combat malnutrition and aligns with India’s goals under the National Food Security Mission.

Strengthening Global Nutrition Security

India’s fortified rice export initiative symbolizes a fusion of technology, nutrition, and trade. By promoting fortified foods, India contributes not just to economic growth but also to global efforts in addressing nutrient deficiencies. The successful export to Papua New Guinea demonstrates India’s expanding reach and its credibility as a dependable supplier in international food markets.

APEDA’s strategic initiatives continue to enhance India’s export readiness through training, quality control, and market development programs. These actions ensure that Indian agricultural exports meet stringent global standards while supporting the nation’s broader goal of sustainable and inclusive trade growth.

The export of fortified rice from Chhattisgarh marks a new chapter in India’s agricultural success story  one driven by innovation, cooperation, and commitment to feeding a healthier world.
