India reaffirmed its commitment to clean energy innovation at the Mission Innovation Annual Gathering 2025, held in Seoul, South Korea from April 9 to 11. The event brought together global leaders and experts in sustainable energy, where the Indian delegation, led by the Department of Biotechnology (DBT), made a notable contribution by showcasing India’s BioE3 Policy and its pioneering Integrated Biorefinery initiatives.
The gathering marked another chapter in India’s active engagement under the Mission Innovation (MI) framework, an initiative that originated during COP21 in Paris, with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and former French President François Hollande coining the term. India, co-leading the Mission Integrated Biorefinery along with the Netherlands, has emerged as a central force in promoting biotechnological innovation for a greener future.
At the event, the DBT highlighted the country’s BioE3 Policy—Biotechnology for Environment, Energy, and Economy—which is designed to support the development of sustainable technologies for the low-carbon manufacturing of fuels, chemicals, and materials. The Indian team emphasized how this policy not only addresses environmental concerns but also fuels economic growth by fostering an innovation-led ecosystem.
India’s presentation resonated with the international community, particularly its focus on integrating Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Bioenergy (CCUB) in biomanufacturing processes. These discussions took place during engaging roundtables and technical reviews, where India’s leadership in this space was widely acknowledged.
The delegation also participated in focused discussions on biomanufacturing using biomass, exploring avenues for research, development, and demonstration (RD&D). Visits to clean energy facilities, along with collaborative sessions at Hanyang University and the Korea Institute of Science and Technology—coordinated by the Indian Embassy in Seoul—offered deeper insights into global best practices and shared priorities.
India’s initiatives stood out as practical, scalable solutions to climate change, reinforcing the shared goal of accelerating decarbonization efforts through global cooperation. As countries navigate the challenges of the climate crisis, India’s voice continues to echo a message of hope, innovation, and shared responsibility for a cleaner, more sustainable world.
