Global Indices for Reforms and Growth Initiative
To further enhance international benchmarking, India has launched the Global Indices for Reforms and Growth (GIRG) initiative. Under this framework, the Government monitors 26 select global indices published by 16 international agencies, covering four themes: economy, development, governance, and industry. The Development Monitoring and Evaluation Office (DMEO) of NITI Aayog acts as the central knowledge partner and coordinator, ensuring effective monitoring and reporting.
Role of Nodal Ministries
The 26 indices under GIRG have been assigned to 17 nodal Ministries, each responsible for reviewing methodologies, engaging with international publishing agencies, and integrating official Indian data sources into computations. The Ministries are also tasked with identifying performance gaps and implementing policy reforms to improve India’s standing on these global metrics. This approach aligns domestic reforms with global benchmarks and drives measurable improvements across sectors.
Methodology and Data Integration
The Government emphasizes that index compilation follows internationally recognized standards, ensuring transparency and comparability. The updates to GDP, CPI, and IIP methodologies incorporate structural economic changes, improved statistical methods, and the latest data sets. Such refinements aim to provide accurate, real-time insights for policy formulation and international reporting.
Driving Policy Reforms and Growth
Through the GIRG initiative, India seeks to proactively identify areas requiring reforms and leverage insights from global indices to enhance governance, economic competitiveness, and industrial performance. Coordination between nodal Ministries and line departments ensures that policy interventions are data-driven and aligned with global best practices.
According to Minister of State Rao Inderjit Singh, the initiative represents India’s commitment to evidence-based policymaking, international transparency, and continuous improvement in global rankings. The data-driven approach strengthens India’s strategic planning capabilities and fosters greater accountability.
