India to Chair International IDEA 2026, Leading 35 Nations

India is set to chair the International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA) in 2026, representing 35 member countries. This leadership role highlights India’s growing influence in global democratic governance and electoral management.
As of January 22, 2025, India has a registered electorate of 991 million, the largest in the world. By chairing International IDEA, India will guide discussions on democracy, electoral integrity, and policy innovation across member nations, fostering collaboration and sharing best practices.

Global Electorate and Member Nations

The 35 IDEA member countries collectively have approximately 1.88 billion registered electors. Some of the key member countries and their electorates include Indonesia (204.4 million), Brazil (155.5 million), Mexico (98.2 million), Philippines (68.4 million), Germany (60.5 million), and France (43.3 million). The extensive electorate highlights the scale of democratic engagement represented under India’s chairmanship.

Significance of India’s Chairmanship

India’s role as chair will emphasize the nation’s experience in managing large-scale democratic processes, including multi-phase elections, technological innovations in voting, and inclusive voter engagement. India’s participation will strengthen cooperation among IDEA members on governance reforms, electoral training, and capacity building.

With a rich history of parliamentary democracy and successful administration of complex elections, India brings practical insights that can benefit other member nations in ensuring transparency, fairness, and efficiency in electoral processes.

Future Cooperation and Initiatives

During its tenure, India aims to promote knowledge sharing in areas such as digital electoral tools, data-driven policy making, and voter education campaigns. The chairmanship will also facilitate partnerships between countries for research, training programs, and democratic innovations that strengthen representative governance globally.

By leading International IDEA, India will contribute to shaping international norms for electoral integrity, fostering citizen participation, and reinforcing democratic resilience. The initiative will further enhance India’s global diplomatic footprint while demonstrating its commitment to democratic principles.
