India’s Second Commonwealth Games
This will be India’s second time hosting the Commonwealth Games after Delhi 2010. The 2030 edition is especially significant as it marks 100 years since the inaugural Games were held in Hamilton, Canada, in 1930.
Dr. P.T. Usha, President of the Commonwealth Games Association India, called the selection a “powerful opportunity to inspire our youth and strengthen India’s international sporting reputation.” She emphasized that the Games would showcase India’s evolving infrastructure, hospitality, and commitment to global sports partnerships.
Ahmedabad’s Growing Global Sports Presence
Ahmedabad, with a population exceeding five million, has already established itself as a sports powerhouse. The Narendra Modi Stadium hosted the 2023 Cricket World Cup final and is set to anchor the Commonwealth venues.
Officials suggest the 2030 Games could serve as a stepping stone for India’s bid to host the 2036 Olympics and Paralympics, aligning with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision to make India a global sporting hub.
Streamlined Format, Global Optimism
The selection follows a challenging phase for the Commonwealth Games movement. After Victoria, Australia withdrew from hosting duties in 2026, Glasgow stepped in to rescue the event. To ensure long-term sustainability, the Games were redesigned with fewer sports and reduced costs, attracting new interest from nations like India and Nigeria.
Commonwealth Sport stated that it “assessed candidate cities across a wide range of criteria,” including sustainability, accessibility, and economic viability. The body also confirmed that discussions are underway to support Nigeria’s bid for the 2034 Games.
Global Reactions and Strategic Significance
Leaders across the sporting world welcomed the move, describing it as a “revival of faith” in the Commonwealth movement. Glasgow 2026 chair George Black said the decision “creates a powerful bridge between Scotland and India, symbolizing unity through sport.”
The 2030 Games are expected to feature a slightly expanded sports roster compared to 2026, reviving the optimism that the Games can continue to evolve with modern priorities such as gender equality, sustainability, and digital innovation.
India’s sports ministry and the Gujarat government are reportedly preparing a detailed plan for new venues, training centres, and transport connectivity to host athletes from all 74 Commonwealth nations and territories.
Looking Ahead
Experts believe that hosting the Commonwealth Games will accelerate India’s investment in sports infrastructure and create opportunities for local industries, tourism, and employment. It also reaffirms India’s growing influence in international sports governance.
With the world watching, Ahmedabad’s successful hosting of the 2030 Commonwealth Games could pave the way for a larger dream — bringing the Olympic Games to India in the coming decade.
