India, West Indies, Pakistan Open T20 World Cup 2026 With Wins

RR Team, February 7, 2026February 8, 2026
The ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026 got off to a thrilling start on Friday as defending champions India, along with West Indies and Pakistan, registered victories on an action-packed opening day of the tournament. Strong individual performances and decisive moments defined the early narrative, setting the tone for what promises to be a fiercely competitive edition.

Suryakumar Yadav anchors India’s opening win

India began their title defence with a 29-run victory over the United States in Mumbai, overcoming early trouble thanks to a composed and authoritative knock from skipper Suryakumar Yadav. After opting to bat first, India were rocked in the Powerplay as USA’s bowlers exploited early movement and pressure.

The dismissal of Abhishek Sharma for a duck was followed by a dramatic collapse that left India struggling at 46 for four after six overs. With momentum firmly against them, Suryakumar Yadav took charge, displaying calm leadership and controlled aggression.

Supported briefly by Rinku Singh and later by Axar Patel, the Indian captain held the innings together, ensuring stability during a difficult phase. His well-paced 84 off 49 balls guided India to a competitive total of 161, a score that proved sufficient on a surface offering assistance to disciplined bowhling.

Indian bowlers seal the contest

India’s bowlers responded with intent, striking early to derail the USA chase. Mohammed Siraj and Arshdeep Singh removed the top order, reducing the visitors to three wickets down inside the Powerplay.

A fighting partnership between Milind Kumar and Sanjay Krishnamurthi briefly revived USA’s hopes, but consistent breakthroughs ensured India retained control. Despite Shubham Ranjane’s resilient late effort, USA fell short as India sealed their first points of the tournament.

West Indies dominate Scotland in Kolkata

In Kolkata, West Indies showcased their depth and power, defeating Scotland by 35 runs in a comprehensive performance. After a cautious start, the Caribbean side found momentum through Shimron Hetmyer, whose aggressive strokeplay changed the complexion of the innings.

Hetmyer’s fluent 64 off 36 balls provided the backbone of West Indies’ total of 182. Contributions from Rovman Powell and Sherfane Rutherford ensured the innings gathered pace at the death, putting Scotland under significant pressure.

The West Indies bowling unit followed up with a disciplined display, with early wickets denting Scotland’s chase. Romario Shepherd delivered a match-defining spell, including a dramatic hat-trick, to extinguish any hopes of a comeback.

Pakistan survive Netherlands scare

Pakistan faced a stern test against the Netherlands but managed to hold their nerve in a tense finish. After restricting the Dutch side to 147, Pakistan appeared comfortable before a mid-innings collapse brought the contest to life.

With the required rate climbing and wickets tumbling, Faheem Ashraf produced a sensational late cameo, smashing three sixes in a single over to swing momentum decisively. His unbeaten 29 ensured Pakistan crossed the line with three balls to spare.

Strong start sets tone for tournament

The opening day results underline the competitiveness of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2026, with traditional powerhouses tested early by emerging and associate teams. India’s recovery under pressure, West Indies’ all-round dominance, and Pakistan’s late surge highlight the fine margins that define T20 cricket.

With several high-profile matches lined up in the coming days, fans can expect intense contests as teams look to build momentum in the group stage. The tournament’s early drama has already reaffirmed why the T20 World Cup remains one of cricket’s most compelling spectacles.
